Who do you think makes a better turbo?

Garrett or Holset

Both can be had for cheap and DIY turbo upgrades can run as low as $450.

You can get a T04B/E or a Holset HX35/40 for around $300 + $170 for bullseye housing, and you have a $470 turbo upgrade capable of 10s. THe only problem is which way to go!

Where are you seeing them for those prices? Garett is a name I am familiar with. Holset is something new to me. mark

everywhere, those are the going prices, look around, ebay, dsmtrader, etc.

Look at the power your looking to make. Garrett turbo's have proven themselves time and time again. Just look at how many people use full garrets or hybrids in the time's gallery. Holeset is also new to me as well. I would like to see some runs made and a few 1/4 mile passes on some holsets.

holset sounds new to everyone in the sport compact community but they've been around for years. they are very reliable turbochargers and are used on many diesel engines. if you look elsewhere they can be found in high performance race applications. indy cars :)
i work for comprent motorsports and we run indy cars with holset turbos in the HSR series. i'll post some pics as soon as i can

Exactly, thats the thing, Garretts are proven, but Holsets are the new kid on the block, the fact that they have bearings twice the size of the garretts and last much longer is very attractive. Supposedly they are more efficient as well.

The only problem that I see is where to find the Center cartridge and compressor cover to complete the turbo. I haven't seen any websites where you can buy just those two things.

I would not buy a used turbo. To me that's just asking for trouble. I'll follow the thread and see what the guys have to say about the two turbo's though! Mark

Im talkin new or rebuilt here, not used. Garretts are CHEAP!

Holsets on the other hand are on diesel trucks, they last forever no matter how used they are.

You can usually find new holests on ebay for pretty cheap. There's a remanufactured H1C on ebay right now for like 200$.

DSMtuners, holset turbos. There's alot of good info in that thread.

I'm saving up right now to buy the Bullseye housing and put a H1 seres holset in it. There are alot of viable holset turbo options to use with the bullseye housing. It all depends on the size of the turbine whee, because most all of the chra's share the same bolt pattern. Alot of people look past the H1 series turbos becaues they are older, when in reality the H1C is almost identical to the HX35, and the H1E is almost identical to the HX40.

Just one warning. BE SURE you know the size of the turbine wheel before you buy the holset. Have the seller measure it. There are about 2384903249302 different variations in the turbos, and some include different sized turbine wheels.

One other things too, is that a holset turbo will last you almost literally forever. Garret has always pwned the US turbo market, and Holset has been the leader in Europe. We weren't getting any holset turbos on any US production cars until Chrysler decided to put them on their dodge cummins trucks. If you go up to anyone who has a cummins dodge with 150k+ miles on it, and ask them what kind of shape their turbo is in., they will usually say "it's in like new condition" because it really is. To get a holset to have shaft play anywhere under 100k miles, you seriously have to intentionally #### it up.

The Ford 2.3L turbo guys have been using these turbos for some time with great results and they have 8v sohc's. These turbo's look to flow more air than Garrett turbos of the same size. I say holsets are a great setup for the price.

I just picked up a used HX-35 for $300 and a Used H1C for $85... You see the HX-35 have the Map Width Enhancement groove that effectivly widens it's efficency map by a great deal. I'm getting the H1C because one it's cheap and a good back up if my HX-35 dies (yeah right that won't happen anytime soon), and also to see the difference in performance between the 2 with the identical set-up. I'll use pocket dyno and do like 10 runs on each turbo and come up with an good mean for each turbo for ET's and HP.. If I can get the guys here to let me use their dyno for a good day and not charge me a arm and a leg I would do that as well.

My total HX-35 set-up internally gated is going to be $650 total after I get the Turbine Houseing and the oil feed and return lines for it. That is very cheap for a turbo capable of pushing 550 WHP and able to hold 35 PSI all the way to 9500 RPM.. The HX-40 is good for over 650 WHP and SRB is saying something like 700 WHP with it. I would have to see that but I can believe it. They are making almost 300 WHP on motors twice our displacement in the diesel community so It is semi locical.

Once I get my Tranny back from TRE the motor should be built and my FMIC should be installed. Once broken in I will definilty be writing up a good review of the good and bad of the HX-35 and H1C Holset turbos.
