I was moving from Ohio to California a few days ago and 1600 miles in my trip my 96 tsi awd takes a shit. Had to get it towed in the middle of the desert for 150 miles and get a uhall to tow it the rest of the way. Now I am in San Diego with no car to drive. I was going to just get the 7 bolt rebuilt but you guys have convinced me to do a 6 bolt swap. So I have a couple of questions:

1) should I just do the bottom? (don't have a lot of $ right now)
2) How much should it cost?
3) Where in Southern California should I take it?

Road Race Service gave me a price of $7000 for parts and install of just the bottom. I think thats a little over the top.

PLEASE HELP!

Thank You in advance

What exactly is wrong with the car? What does "taking a shit" imply? Is it out of gas maybe? If you have crankwalk then you are basically SOL because its going to take quite a bit of time and quite of bit of money to fix it. You might as well rent a car for the rest of the trip. Try being a little more specific about the problem with the car so maybe someone can suggest something.

hey have you got your swap done yet? I know some one that does all the misubishi in this area. he is really good. he said he would do it for 2,300. engine are kind of high right now . he does my shit that i don't do myself and i don't just let anyone touch my car.

they quoted you for 7k on a bottom end? That really doesnt sound right, even with labor. Whats wrong with the 7 bolt, and what was the quote for(specific parts etc).

What happened was the engine started to overheat and oil pressure started to drop, when I started to pull over it stalled. After I let it cool I didn't want to start but I finally got it but when I reved it up to 2000 it started to knock real loud so I let it stall again and called a tow. Now it will start but when I push in the clutch it starts clicking and if I try to move it its even louder. Oh ya, got metal in the oil too.

Main things they quoted me for were:

350 resurface head
800 Build long block
175 bore cylinders
450 wiseco pistons
250 1g oil pump
280 act flywheel
1930 complete removal + installation
455 adapt 1g to 2g head
600 core charge

plus quite a bit of other shit gaskets, berrings, ect..

any other shop should be able to do all these for much cheaper
my motor was completely taken out, put back in, dissassembled and assembled, as well as buying tons of parts in there from the dealer that i didnt ahve, for 1900 from ADFX, and they did a top quality job too

ive heard nothing but good things from road race but those prices do seem a bit on the high side. Maybe its because everything is expensive in cali

Thats real high. My complete removal and installation was 650.00 and they did a great job.

If I'm not mistaken, the price quote was for a 6-bolt swap into a 2G, not 7-bolt removal and installation in a 2G or 6-bolt removal and installation in a 1G.

I've found a couple of machine shops to rebuild my current 7 bolt for $3,000 for everything. But I still can't find anyone else to swap a 6 bolt in So. Cali.

What do you guys think I should do? Keep calling around or just say #### it for now and get my 7 bolt rebuilt?

Thanks guys.

I just got to San Diego about 2 days ago and I'm staying at my aunts condo so I don't know anyone down here where I could work at their shop or have all of the tools.

But, now I found a almost completely built 6 bolt for 2500, it just needs a few more parts so the total cost I was quoted was 5500 for the complete 6 bolt swap.

What do you think guys?

Get the 6 bolt!!! If you rebuild the 7 bolt IT WILL CRANKWALK!! Ive seen alot of people i know try to rebuild the 7 bolt and after a couple of hundread miles it crankwalked. i even saw one at 56 miles go caput.

The main thing is 7 bolts do not like to get rebuilt at all!! save yourself the trouble and money get a 6 bolt just to throw in so you can get back home, you can probably go buy one at a junk yard or whatever just replace the timing belt and tensioner. i know your proabably strapped for cash, i just dont want you to dig your wallet even deeper if you try to get another 7 bolt engine or rebuild the one you have.

and the sound you heard when you push in the clutch is the crank hitting the crank angle sensor. a sure sound of crankwalk. and you said you had metal in the oil take off the oil pan and see whats wrong from underneath.

Check out http://www.jacksonautomachine.com They sell built six bolts already assembled.
The exact link is here:

http://www.jacksonautomachine.com/html/shopping/list_section.cfm?sectionId=2

They make blocks that are gauranteed to hold up to a certain horsepower. The 400+ horsepower costs $1,880.00

It comes with wiseco forged pistons and rings, arp rod bolts, and shotpeened 1g rods. Plus everything is magnafluxed and inspected thoroughly (I know these guys personally, they are geniuses). You can get a crappy stock short block from conicelli for $1600, or you can get a monstrously built 6 bolt for only like $280 more plus shipping. Only problem is that they are located here in MD.
