Well it's starting to warm up here in Cali, and since this is the first warm weather my car has seen since adding the front mount IC, I am starting to have some cooling issues :(

After searching through a bunch of old threads on the subject, I came across one that advocated the use of an 89-91 RX7 thermostat: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=108062

It looks like a pretty good idea, but has anyone else tried it, and does it really work? Does anyone know if this stat fits in the 2g housing?

I have a 91 180* t-stat in my 99 gsx and it fit fine, and it did help a little with my front mount, but I ended up having to go with a fluidyne cause of my huge core.

damax03, you're using a 91 RX7 t-stat? I already have a fluidyne, and I'm still having issues. What kind of temps are you running while cruising at freeway speeds on warmer days?

A thermostat warms a car up, it doesn't cool it off.

Stick with factory recommendations.

If you're having cooling issues, be most suspect of your water pump. If it's one with a plastic impeller, it may be shot.

In what way does a thermostat warm a car up?

Isn't it supposed to cool the car by diverting water to the radiator?

A thermostat warms a car up by blocking the flow of coolant to the radiator...therefore the coolant stays in the block and gets hot...warming the car up.

I see what you're saying. I guess the best way of characterizing it would be to say that the t-stat allows the engine to warm the coolant when it’s closed, and it allows the radiator to cool the coolant when it’s open.

Now that we’ve established the purpose of a thermostat, let me reiterate my original question: Does anyone else have experience using an RX7 t-stat in a DSM? Did it help with cooling? I know some people drill holes in there stock stats, and that is supposed to help. I would think a higher flowing stat would have a similar effect.

This has gotten a bit deep in earlier posts.

I don't understand the fascination with using "wrong" parts on cars. If Mits would have found the Mazda design to be a better choice for their engine, they'd use it. If we had found it to be better in the course of the last fifteen years, it'd be in the tuning guide.

If you're already overheating in the couple of weeks of warmed weather we've had so far -and we've not gotten to the routine summer hell of the California desert yet- then there's something amiss with your system that no fiddling around is going to fix.

um....don't they make low temp thermostats for our cars????

I put a 170degree in my car a couple days ago......

this basically allows the coolant to enter the radiator SOONer in turn keeping the running temp of the engine coolant lower....

try redline water wetter....made by redline oils. dyno tests proved almost 20 degree temp differences.

water wetter and a 170degree thermostat actually gave me noticeable performance gains on those warmer days.

If you need a use a lower temp thermostat, use the Misu OEM 180* one, part number MD997607.

Don't use shit from another car.

Like Defiant said, if you have a cooling problem a thermostat will either not fix it at all, or just hide the real problem.

remove tstat, run your car without one :thumb: :p

Dont do that...

On a track car just cut the legs of the backside of the stat removing the flapper and spring...

You need some restriction.

On circle track cars we try different diameter restictor disks..

IMHO... As long as the RX stat fits and is the same or lower temp than the stocker you probably are'nt hurting anything... Maybe or maybe not gaining anything either...

WRONG.

MNGSX got the rest of it, thanks man.

You need a restriction to provide a pressure differential. You'll probably overheat in the head if you remove the thermostat.

A 20* temp difference by using water wetter? Seems a little far fetched to me. I bought some a while ago in hopes to keep temps slightly cooler myself, however unfortunately a coolant hose behind the turbo blew 2 days later spilling all the brand new fluids all over the floor . Maybe I'll pick up another container and see how it does, as I never was able to test it out before. I had to change my Tstat which is why I had changed the coolant and added water wetter before. My temps reach an absolute max of 203* if I am idling for a while, while cruising they are generally around 196*, and this is on a 93* or so day. However no AC has been used etc so I'd like to see if I cant cut the temps down just slightly, in hopes that maybe at one point this summer I can use AC. I have the money for a fluidyne, however I've really had my eye on a 50trim and cams so the money is being saved for that :). Anyone else have any experience with water wetter that they'd like to share?

I also have a fluidyne with water wetter and see no differance with or without it. If you plan to go with a 50 trim and cams, and you already have cooling issues, you will definately need the fluidyne so bite the bullet and buy it now and save a little longer for the other parts. Why would you put off buying what you will need just so you can get what you want sooner. Doesnt seem like you have thought it out very well.

NOTE.....water wetter only does the trick if mixed ONLY with water.

If you have antifreeze/coolant in there with the water it won't work quite as well.

20* lower is what they claim on the bottle...I'd say you might at least get 10

I noticed quite a difference with the waterwetter...but I also installed a 170* thermostat

I am running straight water with water wetter.

Be careful with that, you can get boiling at hot spots in the head even if the overall temperature of the water is not above the boiling point.

I would say add a little bit of coolant to protect you against this.

running water wetter with water alone is how the people at redline reccomend it.....

the cooling potential of water alone is better then antifreeze/coolant

My current turbo is water/oil cooled, the 50trim would be straight oil cooled, and I might possibly install an additional oil cooler. How have I not thought this out well? Like I said on average my temps are at 196* on a 93* or so day, the absolute max they ever hit while at idle would be 203*. So please dont tell me what I have or havent thought about.
