i have had a 91 talon tsi for a few weeks now and i notice that the motor runs really really hot... first is this the case with everyone
and if it is can you give me some ideas maybe even pics of how
you brought only cool air to you air filter?
i was thinkin of buildin some sort of housing around it but theres
not much room as you know

all DSMs and most turbo motors in general run hot. cold air intakes have been discussed many times there are advantages and disadvantages on our turbo motors. its not really needed anyway seeing as we have intercoolers. do some searching on this and im sure youll find all the info you need

An intercooler is not a substitute for sucking in hot engine bay air. Read this:

The cooler the intake charge, the more efficient the intercooler. Nuff said.

Efficient is the wrong word.

It will result in cooler intake temps overall. But it will not make the intercooler work any "better."

I cut a hole under my air filter on my old GST. You can get a hood scoop. You can take out your head light. You can buy a FMIC with short route piping and get a cold-air intake from Buschur. You can simply make some enclosure to seperate your filter from the rest of the engine compartment. You can cut a hole under the filter like I did and run some ducting to the fog light location(if they are gone or you are willing to lose them)it will give a better effect than simply cutting the hole. You can also just drill a few holes under the air filter to let some cooler air in. Some of these are more or less ghetto, some are expensive and elaborate. Good luck

In a way it does make it more efficient, if the temp overall is cooler entering the intercooler, less the temp drops going through the intercooler. End result less pressure drop, more efficiency.

Intercooler efficiency is a function of the temperature drop through the intercooler, compared to the temperature different between the charge air and the ambient temperature flowing through the intercooler core.

If you have a lower temp drop through the intercooler, then you might have a less efficient cooler.

However, a cooler intake air gives you a cooler charge air, which makes the IC less likely to heat soak.

As measured by what means? Do you mean the factory gauge is riding high? If so, start with a new radiator cap. It can go so far as being a bad water pump impeller.

As for hot? Go out in the dark, make a good run up a hill under boost, stop at the top and pop the hood. We'll show you hot.

I can see his next thread already:

" Are exhaust manifolds supposed to glow like that?"

( j/k ) ;)

LOL ... funny thing, when my CAS went out my manifold was GLOWING red hot from like a 15 minute cruise ... and another buddy said it was ok because turbo engines get hot.

Must be the pulled ignition timing. They do glow, but low timing can heat it up too much.

I made a "cold air box" around my filter. I used some spare sheet metal laying around my garage to enclose my air can and keep heat away. I then enlarged a hole to the right of my headlight, ran some plastic tubing down to the left of the center hole in my 1g talon front air dam, and made a scoop to suck in air. According to my logger this dropped the intake temps, so it helped out some. The only bad thing was that the filter gets a dirty quicker (from debris/bugs).
