Hey all
I know the starion intercooler is not the best tot use but I’m CHEAP.I was thinking if I bought one cheap I could make custom end tanks to make the intercooler pipes enter from the same side using two separate tanks to go in and a half round tank on the other end to flow better. I did kind of a sketch of it so you can see better of what I’m talking about. Has anybody seen of heard of anything like this .I was wondering about the flow and pressure drop before I went and put all that work into it. Thanks for any opinions

I don’t know for an absolute fact but I am fairly certain that a starion intercooler will have more pressure drop then a stock intercooler. The intercooler will dissipate heat much better which is a plus but you will be loosing enough boost in the process that you really aren’t gaining anything. As for price I don’t know how much of the work you are doing yourself but if someone else is doing most of it it will be hard to make this a good bang for the buck mod. A few of my friends have had pretty good luck copying the IRC design on their sidemount units. You can also cut out the section of inner fender that covers the stock unit to get more airflow to it.

yeah i heard a starion intercooler will have more of a pressure drop but i was figuring with the inlet and outlet on the same side i might have less drop.As for the work i can do it myself so i would save on the labor.I guess i could make it and see.Do you know a way tp pressure test a intercooler to see how much it drops

Did you get the piping customed made??? Can you take a picture of the piping, I'm kinda interested to see how it looks!!!

Also does anybody know the flowrate on the starion FMIC compared to the stock side mount???

I don't know the flow rates, but it's not that great.

My old starion core setup with fully custom 2" intercooler piping actually caused me to LOSE two lbs of boost just by bolting it on. The core was less efficient than the stock core. ;)_ I guess... :p

all the piping on the intercooler was rewelded to 2.25 inch pipe , all the piping is 2.25 in the intercooler set up, my car pulled alot harder in 2nd and 3rd gear when i first put it on with stock boost, then i got a fullturbo back 3 inch exhuast no cats, and cranked the boost to 18 psi and the piping and intercooler hold up fine! i love the thing although it is no Apexi or Greddy but it did save me 600.00 hahaha well if u guys have anymore questions i love talkign aboiut DSM's so just ask!!

You said that you got the piping for $200.00 from turboimports.com???

no the total cost for everything was like 200.00 the piping was like 130.00 the cooler was like 70.00 and the welding was free also nuts and bolts ect... best 200.00 ever spent

Hey Bigwilly6754, I just got your PM, but not sure what you are talking about send me one back.

Anyways the starion is a great cheap upgrade, but them endtanks do not flow too well and will give you severe presuure drop and then heating under higher boost applications. If you get new endtanks and better flowing piping, then it is a pretty good FMIC.

The Supra Sidemount actually flows better and cools better then a stock Starion ever could, they flow almost 500CFM's, the Starion can't unless it is modded, great pics and good luck with your car.

Hey Guys,
Anyone here successfully installed one of these into a 1st gen DSM? Is it better to just buy a kit that is already built to fit my car? I was thinking I could save alot of $ by making my own piping and finding a good IC in the junk yard. Are these IC's efficient at all? Sorry about all the questions but there seems to be alot of knowledge on this board from what I've read....Thanks in advance

Hi, I was reading through some of the forums and was reading that the starion intercooler has really crappy flow. But I was planning on upgrading to a T3 trubo. would this outweigh the starions crappy flow or doesn't it matter? reminder I can get the IC dirt cheap.
