When doing an engine rebuild, would one need apr main studs and rod bolts? is it a good idea to use these? And what are APR conrod bolts are they the same as rod bolts? Yeah, because I'm going .020 over on eagle rods/ross pistons combo and switching over from the 7 bolt to 6 bolt bottom,so I need to know. Shine some light into my darkenss please, maybe suggestions of what other parts it may be good to use when doing a rebuild. i would need one of these too right? http://slowboyracing.com/Engine/front cover/front_cover.html

Okay first, yes if you can afford to step up to ARP bolts do so. Con rod bolts and rod bolts are the same thing, and if possible use the head studs, the front cover contains the oil pump and you should use a new oil pump on a rebuild(no sense in having a new motor take a crap because of an old oil pump). If you are doing the rebuild yourself make sure you take your time and clean everything really good, use the correct tools (and no plastigage is not the correct tool for measuring clearance). Hope that helps out a bit.
 
According to HorePower HQ.com if you go with arp main studs you need to line hone the block and main caps or else you WILL trash your thrust bearings.
 
Why shouldn't you use ARP mains? If they are installed correctly (allign hone) then they are better than stock.

Two reasons:

1) The ARP mains are smaller in diameter than the stock bolts. This means there is a possibility that the main caps could shift, which may cause crank walk. On top of that you will need to have the mains align honed to make sure the crank lines up ($160). If you use the ARP hardware I would recommend that you also install the CRCO main kit. The kit cost approx. $50, if memory serves me, and it will cost you anywhere from $50-$150 for a machinist to install. So, your looking at the potential of an added cost of over $350 on top of the cost of the ARP main bolts.

2) If John Shepard can run 8's in the 1/4mi. using the stock main bolts, and they haven't given him any problems or failed, why does anyone else need anything different? I seriously doubt that anyone on this board is stressing there block to the same level that he is.

Stick with a new set of stock main bolts.
