Hey guys, This should help you all have your own shaved-polished valve cover.
Warning: If you haven't worked with these tools or products before then use caution or Your valve cover could be damaged.
Also This was done on a 420A valve cover but can be done on both engine types/.
Tools: Grinder - W/ grinding wheel & wire brush
60,100,150,320,1000,1500 sand paper - sanding block!!
Brake cleaner-or any good oil cleaning product
Paint Remover - caution, wear gloves!!
scraper - razor blades
Polish wheel, brown polish block(bought at sears), 2000grit sand papper
1st:
Removel - Start by unpluging anything conected to the cover - plugs, hoses, pcv, valve, take off coil.
Remove the valve cover by losening the bolts starting outside to the center. Be carfull if you want to reuse your gasket don't pry on it when
taking it off.
2nd:
Paint removal - After the cover has been taken off, start by Cleaning it up with oil removal products. After that, using sand paper or your grinder with a wire brush on it to ruffen up the cover. No need to sand it all down or sand groves into the cover, Be gentle.
Now using your paint remover (I bought mine at autozone-spray can type) Spray it all over the top of you're valve cover (the more the better) - don't worrie if you get any on the inside of the cover it won't hurt it, but remove all gaskets you can find. After about 30min - 1hour, all the paint should be bubbled up. If not, re-apply more remover on those spots.
Now take your scraper or razor and start taking the paint off. It should come off somewhat easy but you might need some strength in spots. After I scrapped the cover all down I also had to use the grinder w/ the wire brush to get the rest off that didn't bubble up.
After removing all or most of the paint (the rest will be removed when you start sanding) you need to clean the paint remover off. Use water pressure or Brake cleaner all over the cover. Untill you feel it's clean to touch with your bar hands.
3rd:
Shaving - After removing the paint, your half done. Now comes shaving the letters and numbers of the cover. Using the grinder and clamping the cover to the bench I started by slowly grinding down each letter/number. This took awhile so as not to damage the cover by grinding a hole in it, but will leave some ripples after there all shaved.

4th:
sanding smouth - After shaving the letters/#'s, Now comes sanding. This will take awhile but is the most important thing you have to do. Start with 60grit papper to knock down everything flat. I used 60 grit with a sanding block to take out the ripples in the cover. You start with using 60 grit and slowly work your way up 100,150,320,500,1000 untill everything you want smouth is smouth. Remember the sanding block works great with all the flat surfaces...

5th;
polishing - Now that your cover is shaved and looks smouth, you have two options. first you can polish the cover with a polishing wheel and brown polish block untill you feel it looks great, but remember doing this its like horse power - the more the better.
second option using 2000 grit sand paper, you'll keep sanding and about an hour or more by that time you should be looking at the shine comen through. With this option you will have to use metal polish like: mothers mag polish, which I used to buff up the cover. There are better products to use then this, but that's what I had.
