I plan on putting a system in my '97 spyder within the next week or two, and I'm just wondering what subs (how many, what size) I'll need for it to sound good with the top down. I know their isn't much space in that little trunk for amps and subs, so let me know what you're running and how it sounds, or if you have any suggestions on what might sound good.... I've already got the mids and highs taken care of!
Thanks
Dan

muahahahaa, okay, I have a spyder and I dont want to gloat or nothing but i have a pretty good sound system in it. knock on wood, well youve got the mids and highs so thats good, you should have an amp for them if you did take care of those. Well this is what i have.
exuse my spelling, i dont have time for spell check.
Kenwood exlon radio
kenwood digital eq
kenwood 4 way 6*9 looking to change them
boston aqustick twetters, with crossovers
kenwood amp for highs and mids
800*2 bridged ,rockford phosgate POWER amp(comes with a dial to tune up bass, very nice you can mount anywhere in the car)
pushing 1 cerwin vega 12" stroker
regular box, custom cut to barly fit in the trunk.

okay my own personal experience, im no certified technician or anything but ive dealt with instaling my own systems for quite some time.
tip
if you want louder bass inside the car where it hurts your ears and sounds less outside the car, get an enclosed box.

if you want louder outside the car bass and very nice bass inside get a regular open box. thats what i have.
you can only use one stroker in our car because the room there is, is barely enough for one. trust me I used to have two in there, made it worst and blew them out.

get an enclosed box if youre going with less money on the speaker.

hope this all makes sense, if no just ask

also wich ever box you get if you point the box towards the back you will get more bass in the car than outside, if you point it forward you will get more bass outside than inside.
I went with facing it forward because it sounded a lot better and you dont get the rattle from the trunk.
:D

Good Luck.

and if that aint enough, take out the crapin back seat :D throw in 4 rockford 15inch power hx2's and 8 bd 1001, for bass that will shake you a little, might even make bolts loosen up, on cars next to you at a light :thumb: :thumb: OMG

Or you could get those bass shaker things, they're little black round things(look like a speaker magnet w/o the cone). They vibrate to the bass, but don't put out sound. Hook one up under each front seat and take a female passenger for a ride;)

I use to have to Kicker L7 powered by a DX 700 and you could definately feel those. They would make the hair in your noise vibrate so much that it would tickle.

I have a small setup cause I need the trunk space.. it's a 10" Kicker Solobaric (the older style..round speaker instead of square.. I heard they hit harder) and it's powered by a Rockford Fosgate 360W amp that peaks at like 550. It hits pretty damn hard for a 10" sub.

2 10" should be fine. Im not a big bass guy but that should do it, even one 10 if powered correctly will bass it up

Well look at my gallery and see what I have..it popoundsl ike crazy inside the car..but only when top up.If you have a spyder there is very hard to get the bass feel inside the car when the top is down..simple as that.

I've got a single Audiobahn 15" sub in my spyder's trunk on a 600w JBL amp. And Crystal components up front on a 50x2 JBL amp. Sounds great for a convertible and I got everything for under $1k. Whatever you get, it's most likely going to have to be custom because the trunk in these cars is a joke. I've got a 2.4 cubic foot ported box, which is about the absolutle biggest you'll be able to fit without using fiberglass to take advantage of all the nooks and crannies. My sub is hidden down in the trunk, facing the taillights....top of the trunk is covered and the two amps are flushmounted. It's clean and simple.

12' rockford fosgate sub w/ a 600watt rms rockfordfosgate sub... its more then enough to give me a headache haha

I have 2x MTX thunder 6000. If i have my windows up and i turn the bass up, i can feel it sucking air out of my chest... hits plenty hard.

hey man, i have a 97 spyder ill give you my 2 setups.
the first one i had up until this past june was 1 jlaudio 10w7 in a small sealed custom built box with an alpine mrv1507 amp(1000 watts). it loosened the bolts on the rear struts and for some weird reason about a week after i had it, my oil cap came off, not sure from bass or what.

My new setup is show setup, not really hard hitting but i got 2 12" memphis audio PR subs with the alpine amp with a custom built box in the back seat. The back seat on our cars are pointless, they hold like a book bag and thats it. My next setup will be show quality but built for alot of bass, probally 3 10w7 or 2 12w7. i kinda want to experament with a new sub company which is the reason i have memphis now, so i may stay with memphis and get a better series sub.
it hit 130.7 with the top down

If you are talking about ported/not ported, get a sealed box (not ported). Ported boxes are louder, but they lose alot of quality in sound.

I have in my 98 awd 6bolt spyder
alpine 7949 cd player
boston pro 6.5 in the doors
boston pro 6.5 in the back 6*9 spots
all fuses and ground blocks under pass seat
butler audio tube driver 475 under the top
ppi deq 230 under the top
ppi electroinic x/over unter the top
2 butler audio 1500 tube drivers on the back wall of the trunk
2.0QB box glased in the floor
ppi flat 15 4ohm
3 monster caps behind the box
that is good for 142dbs w/top up
mark

Man I feel inadequate...

I doubt you will get the serious "Bass" feel like the coupes that are posting.

I have 1 250w max 10" JBL in a WALMART brand box (siliconed inside of box)
and a 200w Alpine amp. Believe me, this thing hurts my ears. I would go for the biggest size sub though so you can get that "LOW" bass

deejay21

you have exactly what I'm looking for, I'm probably going to go with a set-up similar to what you have, but first I have a few questions. Does the top still go down all the way? Did you have to build the box in there, or does it slide in and out, pretty easily. How many cubic feet do you think you've got in that box? Do you think a set of 10's would fit in there, it doesn't really look like it from the picts....

Let me know!

20stang you place your ? about air ride in the wrong place so i was unable to reply there. i sell a full kit for your car for $1,600 shipped to you. it includes 4 air sylinders, all brackets, all air line and fittings, air tank, compressor, switchs , gauges, and valves. i also do custom air ride systems but you would have to bring your car to my shop for that. and the kit is bolt in, a friend of mine is running this kit in his auto cross car. the air cylinders work like a progressive rate spring.
