Speedometer won't work, checked the wire connecting to the transmission, what now?

I did a search and saw a few things about the wire on the transmission coming loose and I checked what i'm pretty sure was it and everything was tight. What can I do to fix it? Is it the speed sensor? How can I check and how much or what can i do to fix it?

The sensor makes-and-breaks contact 4 times per revolution, pull it out and test it with a multimeter. New are $65, used go for around $10.

What exactly is a multimeter, and can I pick one up at just a local auto store?

Volts-Ohms-Milliamps, VOM, electrical tester. You can also just do it with a bit of wire and a test lamp, you're just looking to see if the sensor is working.

Before pulling it, make _sure_ the connector is (was) tight. Mine's come loose three times so far.

Where would the speed sensor connector and the sensor itself be in a 95 AWD?

Are all of your gauges out? Or just the speedo
