Well I worked all weekend and got pretty far on my project of a custom sub enclosure.. For details you can go here (lots of pics for you 56Kers out there, but they are not huge). But for the highlights here is the end result

What is left to do: Put on Fiberglass resin, Sand and paint (picture it my car color green with red with silver outline symbol )

....looks good young man! I sure hope you have an air compressor and DA sander. Whew! If you are hand sanding you are in for a workout!!! Can't wait to see it finished :)

Looks great man...!! I am about to start my sub boxes and I'm not looking forward to the sanding. I just finished some tweeter pods for the front and it felt like I was sanding for a week. I can only imagine how much the sub box will take. The only good thing is, I am going to be building the box at school where we have a full woodshop. Lots of tools that I normally don't get to use. Good luck and cant wait to see it finished.

dude, that is nice.. Keep up the good work.. I got my customed fiberglass box (see in gallery) from a friend, but one thing I dont like about it is becuz I cant put the rear strut bar in...

The way you made yours is perfect becuz you get to keep the strut bar on...... Cant wait to see it when its finished...

Update
========

Well yesterday I did the fiberglass portion. And of course, first try I ****ed it up. I put in too much hardener into the resin and it all gel'ed up on me. So I had to rip off all the Polyester and re-do that part. Good thing I had enough material left over.

Then I got the mix right and soaked that baby good. Damn does that stuff smell. I am really glad that I bought a quality mask with the canisters because it could seriously mess you up.

Today I started the sanding.. oh my god.. the sanding. Started out with 60 grit and am down to 120 grit now. I think I am going to have to get some filler and then sand some more.. there are some "pits" that I just can't seem to get out.

I've seen some people use this spray "bondo" stuff but I can't find it for the life of me. So I will probably have a day tomorrow of sanding as well, and then prep it for paint.

I will post some pics once I have it all sanded. :thumb:

...just get some "fine fill" for any craters/pinholes that you need to cover up or just regular body filler. This is where it is most crucial now because no matter how nice the finishing paint job will be if the box is not sanded down right you will see ALL the imperfections. I am sure you knoiw this though :)
Make sure you were that mask when sanding because the dust is just as bad at the wet resin smell...that is styrene (not good for the ole' brain cells). You'll get "itchy lung" breathing that dust in too!!!
On another note...I have seen boxes built were once the resin sets they remove SOME of the uneccessary wood skeleton to reduce further weight. Depends how you made the box though.
Post more pictures soon as you get to the next step.

No matter how smooth you get the fiberglass you are going to need to use bondo once you are closer to the finishing stages. I wouldn't worry about sanding all the imperfections out, thats what I'd use the bondo for.

Also, are you adding more layers of fiberglass? For a sub enclosurer you're going to need a few more layers to make it rigid enough to withstand the pressure from the subs. I'd use the fiber glass mat for the other layers, since the fibers are more randomly placed in the mat it is stronger. If you have any questions feel free to email, IM, or reply here. Good luck.

The DuPont product used to be called PrePare-A-Cote, I don't know if it's still around. Any automotive paint shop will have the right product.

Thanks for all the advice guys.. I did go out and grab some of the UV Bondo in a tube.. that stuff works pretty good... I am just getting out the final pin holes out of the fiberglass..

I made sure I was wearing the mask when sanding as well. I don't have any brain cells I can afford to loose.:p

I should have pics of it soon all fiberglassed and sanded.

Looks great man. Just curious, still have the spare tire under there? Tough to get at? haha, anyway looks awesome, def post some pics of it painted.

Try DuPont Fill N' Sand(cheap) or 2K Primer/Filler(Not so cheap) ,both are spray fillers and worked pretty good for me on fiberglass

Thanks for the complements guys, There is just free air under the subs at the moment, I will be building enclosed boxes under the subs soon.

And I got rid of the spare tire, jack etc under there.. can't get to it anyways so I took them out.. That is why I have road side assistance with Flatbed coverage:thumb:

Painting will be done this week... Plus I am installing my own H20 Intercooler sprayer this week. I will make a post when I have it done too

I has all been painted and looks really good... I could have done a bit better job on the sanding and filling, because there are a few pitts here and there in it. You know the usual when you do something your self or are critical about everything that is on your car, it is the very first thing that I see, but no one else sees them until I point them out.

But overall it looks good. I will have pics soon, I am just finishing the rest of the roll on my camera. My car is in a show today so I should be able to snag some good pictures of it.:thumb:
