Big huge dent fix

ok i have a giant dent in the right quarter panel of my 95 talon tsi. (shown below)

now do you think this could be fixed with bondo or fiber glass or even by pounding it out or should i have some one professionally do it which i did have a few estimates that it would cost around 1800-2000 grand do fix that area on the car.

so just wanting to maybe get some ideas or i guess a little cheaper way to fix this dent.

well thanks for the offer. but i was wondering if is it possible to take that whole rear quarter panel out and replace it with lets say a junk yard talon n/t model or cut out a piece and then weld it on?

Have you tried using a plunger or a dent remover of some sort? I feel like that'd be pretty easy to pull out.

You will need to attempt to pound that out from inside the trunk, if possible. Then you will need to fill any low spots, hammer down the high spots, prime it, then paint it. It wouldn't be that hat hard of a task if you're familiar with body work at all. You might need to use a stud gun/dent puller.

Pull the inside panel and push on it the best you can. Don't go crazy with a hammer because you'll end up stretching the metal. You'll need a special hammer and dolly to work the metal back into place as best as possible. Then no more then 1/8" filler in the low spots. If anything right now take care of that rust before it becomes more of a problem.

have not tried a plunger but i do not think a plunger will work. The bumper is dented as well but i am sure that could be popped out, but as for on the fender it has like a wrinkle type effect on the bottom near the wheel. I'm not sure how well pounding it out would go i could give it a shot.

should i sand it down and get rid of all the rust first?

The wrinkle and any creases will have to get straightened with a hammer. Yes, sanding will have to be done to remove the rust.

I used a small sink plunger before with good results. Also im almost sure you can get to that from the trunk, if not cut your way in.. Then go ham with a hammer and a round shaped piece of wood to try and "snap" it back in place... Also, looks like your car has "clear coat cancer" get that now and you might be able to easily stop it

ok ill try some of those things you guys have suggested, and for as clear coat cancer you are correct it does have it all over probably from the sun its on the roof and the hood and a few other spots. How can i stop it?

Depending on how bad it is, you can probably at best get a temporary fix that will last you a year or two.. Maybe more.. You'll want to clean around the effected areas and then lightly sand it, don't remove the paint though.. I used a rubber mat that I cut in the middle to put around the damaged area so that when I evenly sprayed clear coat touch up paint it didn't spread. Then you want to somehow cover it up till it dries. Its not very hard to do just time consuming. Ill try finding a writeup for you Im not the best at explaining things

well i just went to this collision repair place down the road from my house. They told me if i was going through my insurance that they would consider it a total loss. but sense i am the one that would want to pay for it they said it be around 2100 bucks to do it and it take about a week.

Also she pointed out i had some rust areas around my quarter panel that there is some rust and a hole is starting.

Thats a pretty big dent. The best way to fix it would be to replace the whole panel. They are welded in so its not like its just a quick replacement. It can fixed by pounding it out and using bondo but not a great a idea depending on the amount of rust there. The only reason it would be a total loss would be if you go through your insurance and they determine that the cost of repairs is like 80% or more of the value of the car at which they will take it to a junk yard and give you a check for what the car costs. You could buy it back at a reduced price though.

Thats a rip off! I wish i could hook you up with my painter. I just got my whole car painted and body work for $2600. I would find a different panel and take yours off to see what you can clean up/fix. Then get it fixed by a shop, that would take alot of the cost out.

Why would anybody consider this a total loss. The dent isn't that bad and rust can be patched. Replacing the whole panel is a lot more work then fixing the dent. There are several products on the market that a lot of body shops don't use that would fix this where you would have never known it was damaged.
The more work you do the less a shop will charge. Start with the rust and rust prevention. Also like I said earlier, a hammer and dolly will go a long way. Just take out the inner plastic and do what you can with what you have and go from there.

ok does that just look a lot worse then it is? i am hoping so.

also what would i need a dolly for?

sense it is starting to get nice out i prob will see if i can start to bang some of the dent out and clean up some of the rust around it.

Thats a lot of rust. . maybe find a diff shell and swap engine etc?
Rust is a pita spreads like cancer all over the place

Because the cost of repairs is 70% of the value or more. Plain and simple. It doesnt book for very much value. Insurance companies dont care about the car.



You can try to work the dent out but you're not fixing the problem with the rear rail. I suggest a donor car or a swap over car. How much rust is on the rest of the vehicle? Is the car truly worth it to you?

Well i just got this car about a month ago the rest of the car is not so bad underneath that area where the dent is prob the worse on the whole thing. there is a little hole on driver sides rocker panel. I mean this one is in way better shape then my last eclipse. I prob did impulse buy this one i actually paid 2700 for it but i sold my 98 gs for 2300 so all and all i paid only 400 dollars out of my own money for the car. i love it so far and would like to keep it as long as i can.

You buy a glue and pull kit for dirt cheap, pull the dent, use a hammer and tap to tap out the high spots. Then after you are done you buff the scuffs out.

A good kit will come with several difference sizes, you can get even the most crazy ass crimps out with little to no trouble.

I hate to say it but your rust problem is pretty serious and I'd be far more concerned about fixing that than the dent.

Well, if I were you I'd be thankful for the dent. Now you know an area of your car that is rusting out and plus dents aren't hard to fix.
