im building my own custom fiberglass box and i need to know how big hte opening of the box needs to be to house a 12" sub. On all the sites i have looked at, the opening is 12" which makes sence, but on one it had a box that opened 11 1/8, i really need to know the size of the opening, if anyone can help, thanks alot

you want to be able to screw the sub onto the opening dont you? then you dont want the hole being 12" or bigger. or it wont hold it. i THINK thats right...it's been a while since i made mine. and mine was made for 2-10's

well, all the boxes online ive seen have 12" openings for the sub and the subs themselves i think have a 12" diameter and then there is a 1" or so ring that you put screws in to mount the sub. Im just making sure that the sub will mount in the 12" diameter hole and still have room to screw it in. If anyone knows, please help, thanks

if you bought your subs new, they should have come with a template.
that you lay on the surface, trace and that is the hole diameter you need to cut out.

what type of subs are they?

most 12" subs dont have a 12" opening. usually 11.5" or a little less. leaving enough lip for the sub to sit on and be screwed in while still keeping the sub snug inside the opening.

go to www.crutchfield.com find your sub, and look at the specs for it, should tell you your mounting hole diameter, all are different, btw, never ever buy anything from them, you get more enjoyment out of setting your money on fire, they are way over priced.

i know that when you buy a sub, there will be a tempelate for the mounting dimensions, i was wonedering, SINCE I HAVENT BOUGHT ANY SUBS YET, if all the dimensions are the same. I guess not though

subs are measured from the outside rim dimensions. the outside will be a 12 inch circle. usually the cutout is close to 11". you can always take material off but its hard to add more! also, you shouldnt design a box without the speaker to start with! different speakers need different boxes!you should decide on a sub before planning the dimensions of the box. good luck with fiberglass(fun stuff)
