:talon: this may the the biggest newbie question you have ever heard but here it is. what the hell is the point (if there is one) of putting a roof scoop on you street car. i do know however that many rally cars have them to allow cooler air into the cockpit as it gets pretty hot in there. but why put one on a street car. besides looks. im 18 years old and watched the Fast and the Furious a long time ago when i was younger. i recently watched it for the first time in a while and realized that there were roof scoops on alot of them. :talon:

Dsmjake There realy is no point how are u going to supply air to the engine if its a roof scoop i usually keep my engine under my hood.

Looks for the most part... The other part would be for heat. I haven't seen any cars around here drive down the road with roof scoops though, only hood scoops...

thats what i was thinking but then again how would air get from the roof to the engine. unless its like some corvetes where the is a ram air filter in the rear of the car. but thats what i was told a whie ago. never seen one.

Im not sure i was just throwing it out there as i was searching for purposes of it on google and thats one of the ones that wasnt mentioned on here but was on the search. i personally dont see how it would come from behind the engine into the engine either.

the only other thing i can come up with is if you have a roof scoop, and no outlet, so the air is trapped and has no where to go, that would create some sort of downforce right? but once again there would be no point as the downforce would be so little on the street that it wouldnt give it much if any. so actually, it would hurt your aerodinamics and would cause lag or restriction.

so if you have a sunroof, its impossible to have a roof scoop right? actually, theres alot of cool mods a sunroof will allow. my latch needs replaced anyway. hmm. haha.

I vote this for worst thread ever....ROFL

There is no actual purpose for a roof scoop on a road car. I mean, you have an A/C right??? It's just styling. And a bad one IMO.

I always thought they were for adding downforce and/or looks. Most midship/rear engines use them for an intake. I never thought about it cooling off the driver.

Best example is get in your car on a hot day and drive it around without rolling the windows down or turning the fan or AC on.

Or, alternatively, ever get into your car on a sunny day? That's what happens with no ventilation. Moving air is cooler. :)

The roof scoop might pull some high school girls that haven't realized its ricey yet LOL.

They're used mostly in Rally racing cars. When you rally race, your windows (obviously) should be up. That vent provides adiquate ventilation for the cab to keep the occupants cool. It also provides downforce on the vehicle.Plus there are some that the air flow through like the one in the pictures

Achelea, nice observation. so basically when your car is sitting in 90 degree temps, the windows are rolled up, without a roof scoop your car is going to be hot as hell because no moving air. now if you do have roof, it wont be so bad when you hop in your car. but i have a sun roof i can just crack open. but, what about rain? well there is one positive thing about a roof scoop.

I thought they added down force... I was half right.

When racing anywhere you are suppose to have the windows up, i do not believe they will add any down force though...

and if get pretty hot inside the car with out the AC on in the summer LOL

so some scoops put the air inside like a sun roof or something

but a better solution is this...

How much does that bad boy cost?
That shirt would keep me cool on the line. The kitchen line gets up to 130"+ degrees, so you get even more exhausted with the heat after a big rush.
Sorry for high jacking the forum.

Actually the use of the roof scoop came from rally but not to cool down the drivers, they use them to help cool the rear brakes by running some flexible tubing from a port on the scoop into the cars rear wheel tunnels. Its essential for rally racers to have flowing air that helps cool there brakes so there braking percentage doesn't go down while they go around the course.

The roof scoop on a DSM or any import at that, came from the first Fast N Furious movie. Some idiots out there actually ended up putting a non-functional scoop on the top of their cars that probably cost them quite a bit. Given the fact you need body and paint work on the roof of your car in order to get it looking good (if you think it does), you need some cash.

God, there are a couple ricers here in the Chitown area that have them. I think it looks like ass, and only caters to their own stupidity by putting a non-functional scoop with no relative purpose other than to create drag on their cars. No harm to them... their junk is slow anyways!
