i put on some new white face gauge overlays and took the needles off to put them on. i didnt turn them at all when i took them off or put them on. but when i put the gauge cluster back on, and turned the car on the rpms went to 3000 and the speedo went to 40mph!!!

so what i did was take all the needles off put the gauge cluster in the car with the cover off, started it, and let it warm up. i put the temp needle on where it normaly is when its warm. put the rpm needle about where idle is (what is idle speed for A/T 2gNT) i only went 12 miles from the last fill up so i put the fuel needle on F. so those 3 gauges are fine.

now when i put the speedo needle on zero and drive around it shows at least 10mph+ over what i am doing.

So my Question is how do i fix it???

thanks for any help!!!

2 ways -- either "pace" somone at a set speed and set it while driving -- or if you know somone with a datalogger-- it will tell you your RMP's and speed

umm sorry to let u know.. but ur not suppose to take the needles off ... ur suppose to put the indiglo gauge around thru the needle ... damn man go on ebay and get a used gauge cluster... ur pretty much settiling for another 40~60 dollars again

the needles come off and go on easy as hell -- no real need to fight w/ them if you have a datalogger

Dude, your are pretty f-cked. Its damn near impossible to get the needles to where they are suppose to be. I am guess the rest of the gauges are off as well. NEVER take the needles off. You have learned a expensive lesson. You will prolly need to get new gauges. You may think, how would I know. I did the same damn thing 2 and half years ago. :)

thats why u should always READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CORRECTLY..... u must of got bootleg ebay gauges that came with HONDA Civic instructions...

Here is the proceedure of removing/replacing needles on a Dodge avenger....same as eclipse basically:

Import Intelligence

Installation Manual Avenger Ver. 1.0

Please read entire manual before proceeding with installation!

To gain access to the gauge cluster in the 1995-2000 Avenger a few basic tools are required.

1. Phillips Head Screw Driver

2. Plastic Squeegee

Step 1. Move steering column to lowest position.

Step 2. Remove the 2 screws in the plastic trim panel in front of the gauge cluster and on the

bottom of the trim. The trim should pull out. It has clips on the bottom that pop out.

Step 3. Remove the 4 screws holding the cluster in.

Step 4. Make sure the 4 Harnesses that plug into the back of the cluster are disconnected.

Step 5. Select a CLEAN work area for taking the gauge cluster apart and take your time doing the next few steps.

Step 6. Unsnap the black plastic clips from the bottom of the gauge cluster and pull apart in halves. The gauge faces should be fully exposed at this point.

Step 7. Lift pointer up over pointer rest. Turn the cluster so the gauge faces are right side up and let the needles settle with gravity. This point should be around 6-7 o'clock on the gauge face. When needle stops mark this spot on the gauge face. This is the speedometer calibration point. The needle must be placed in this spot upon re-assembly so that the speedometer will read correctly.

Step 8. Once you have marked the calibration point on the gauge face Lift the pointer straight up. A little help from a flat blade screwdriver could be helpful.

Step 9. After the needle is off of the speedometer the gauge face should pull off.

Step 10. Use the same process of marking the calibration point and then removing the needles on the tachometer.

Step 11. Pull the pointers straight off of the fuel and temp gauges. These can be calibrated later. Unscrew and remove faces.

Step 12 Acquire a small bottle of application fluid from your local sign shop that makes and installs vinyl signs.

Step 13 Once all the gauge faces are off wash them in luke warm running water.

Step 14. Do not dry the gauges. This will put small fibers on the face of the gauge causing the gauge overlay to be distorted. Shake the gauge faces to remove excess water from them.

Be sure not to touch the gauge face front after they are cleaned.

Step 15. Start with the Fuel gauge. Spray application fluid on the gauge face until it is soaked. Peel the gauge overlay apart so that the gauge overlay is on the transfer tape. Spray the application fluid on the sticky part of the gauge face.

Step 16. Lay the gauge face onto the existing one and align. Press down with one hand on the gauge face while using the squeegee to remove excess Fluids. Be sure to remove all excess fluids or small bubbles may appear.

Step 17. Lay fuel gauge with transfer tape still attached under a lamp that will produce very low heat Keep gauge under lamp for at least 1/2 hr. To see if overlays have dried peel overlay tape off slowly starting at one corner. If the overlays are not dry yet don't peel the overlay tape all the way off.

Step 18. Wash the speedometer, tach and temp faces and apply gauge overlay in same manner.

Step 19. Put the gauge faces back on the gauges. Screw gauges back on but use caution when tightening the screws.

Step 20. Color the needles to the color of your choice or leave red.

Step 21. Place the speedo pointer back on pointing to the calibration point you marked earlier.

Push down lightly. Do not press the pointer all the way down yet.

Step 22. Push the pointer above the needle rest. Use the same process for the tach.

Step 23. Leave the cluster apart and put back in car. The pointers for the tach and speedo should be pointing to zero when the car is turned on. Then push the pointer down all the way when it is pointing to zero. Make sure that the pointer is resting on the pointer rest.

Step 24. Drive your car to the nearest gas station and fill it up.

Step 25. Wait 5 mins before placing the pointer for the gas gauge. Place the pointer on so that it is indicating full on the gauge face.

Step 26. Your car should be warm by now so place the temp pointer in the middle of the gauge.

Step 27. Now turn your car off and make sure temp pointer goes all the way to “C”

Step 28. Remove gauge cluster again and snap the other half back together and reinstall gauges.

P.S. When you put yoru needle back on be sure not to put it on too far or it wont work.

THANK YOU boostineklipz - i knew there was a way!

and Thanks dave99gst with good constructive replys and solutions!!!

and for everones info, i followed the instructions!

dave99gst or anyone, where can i get a datalogger. anyone have the web site.

you could always find one of the road signs that tell your speed as you pass and then stick the needle on..hehe:p dont feel bad i did te same thing the first time... you didnt ruin anything. if you cannot find the data logger....i set mine by knowing at what speed ata certain gear and rpm. like 3000 rpm in 2nd was like 37 mph....i cant exactly remember. but you might try that if you know.

i know how to do the math but my problem is i cant find the info on the web what the gear ratios are for the a/t. do you know where i could find them??? thanks for the reply

is 3000 rps in 2nd 37mph for m/t or a/t

ok bro... 3000 rpm is 37 mph in an auto or right about, take into consideration wheel size... 19" so that aught to get you close..hope that helps...rus
