Hey guys just curious if anybodys every seen a clear timing belt cover...i just don't feel comfortable taking mine off dont want to get shit in there

Dont believe anyone makes one, have to keep in mind the heat these motors produce would probably melt one anyhow

Matt

BESIDES getting stuff stuck up there as a worst case scenario.....

Is there any Con to running without a cover?

Cripes, how much more of a con would you need?

We talked about clear covers before, someplace. No one could come up with anything strong enough, and it'll look like crap after a week of the belt stirring up dust in there anyway.

why would you want a clear timing belt cover? Just go to your local hardware store buy sum primer and a nice colored glossy paint. problemed solve.. it looks nice!

To show off some pretty adjustable cam gears ?

yes exactly, i mean it was just a thought. My timing belt is in great condition, and i really don't want to take the cover off. but i'd also like to see it.

And that answer is no. It seems pointless unless you are running aftermarket cam gears to show off.

Well some people would tell you it is pointless to just show stuff off ;) kinda like venting atm. Personally I think the engine bay presents itself better without a cover, don't know why but just makes the motor look tougher. Kinda like all the "new age" motors with all the plastic covering everything. That just looks stupid

Well, I'm getting pretty bored at home and have just about nothing to do with something like 20 bucks in my account, so... I was thinking of some kind of custom clear timing belt cover. I saw this pic off of dsmtalk and it looks damned good. The only problem that I have with this is that there is very little protection of the timing belt, so what I was thinking is to cut the cover like this pic then somehow attatch a piece of lexan or some type of plastic to the voided area so you can still see inside. One obstacle I see when I pulled the cover and examined it, is that there is very little tolerance between the cover and cam gears/timing belt on the driver's wheel side.

I already did a search, found one topic that was closed but with no real answers, just criticism. I don't want that in this thread, so, if you want to ask "Why would you want to do this?" don't. Also, this is not a discussion of why I should just keep the cover off, as I don't want oil and/or solid crap inside the timing belt cover.

BTW, this pic is from Venom42's car. :thumb:

i would go about it by cutting the lexan the exact same size as the cover....then cut away the sides leaving something on the sides to glue the lexan to. if that makes any since at all.

You realize that the picture you posted is NOT of a clear timing belt cover. It's the stock cover that's been hacked up so just the top and sides are left, allowing you to see through the front/back to see the cam gears.

Yep, I know. I was using the pic as an example by cutting the cover the same way, then replacing the cut part with the lexan.

Also, I think I'm getting what you are saying, James13. When you mean cutting away at the sides, are you talking about the original cover or the lexan piece?

A couple more questions about the materials. Does lexan fog up when it is exposed to extreme temps? Also, what type of glue would be good? Silicone? AP super glue?

Thanks for the replies.

its not cut at all. the top cover peice is just removed...

It is on there, and it is cut. Since when are timing belts shiny?? :)

Look closer.

i would go get a second cover from the junk yard and cut it just like the one pictured.

but on the sides leave a half an inch lip (more or less...basicly something large enough to hold the glue) that you could glue the lexan to. I don't think fogging would be a problem....if so there is always anti fog spray.

I would get 1/8ths inch plexi and heat it and shape it... or 1/4 with a beveled edge and use part ofthe exisiting t/c as a lip to hold it mount it to.

most likly get so dirty or yellowed from heat you wont be able to see through it anymore

but maybe not

Getting dirty, true. When I opened my cover up, there was a slight layer of dust from, what looks like the belt. A nice tint job can hide that though but if it yellows, it may turn to green tint. :notgood:
