Otsego,
Well I am going up to a loacl MAACO place to look at some of their work and maybe get my car painted a new color since it is fading.

I know you get what you pay for but I would like to see what a $300 paint job does through a MN winter :D

Maybe I will get lucky and it will turn out ok.

Has anyone on here had their car painted by MAACO and how did you like it if so.

To answer any questions on why I don't spend the $$$$ for a "good" paint job..... I want this car to be a Rally car so a good paint job wont last anyway ;)

I heard that if you do all the prep (sand, prepsol rub, mask) then they do a good job. If you dont do it and let them you get painted windows and the whole 9 yards. Im sure every macco is different! Its the workers.

Get the same color!!!! Dont go with a different color!

MAACO PAINT JOBS ARE JUNK. I don't know what paint they use but the usually skip so much of the prep work that you get alot of imperfections and the orange peel look. I have a few friends that got it done at maaco and the only one that looked remotely good was painted black. but that one wasn't even that good

I had my truck painted at Maaco a year ago and the paint job wasn't too bad, and I did no prep work. I could spot a few imperfections, but someone who walked by probably wouldn't notice. It cost like $600 canadian. Porsche Red...very nice bright color.

It has lasted through an Alberta winter which is just the same or even worse than a MN winter. Just keep the paint as clean as possible and it should be okay.

I stopped by a shop today to check it out and here is the down low...

For $800 i get the following

4 coats paint, 4 coats clear coat
Dupont Paint
New Front end put on (Neo Drift)
Roof strippped to bare metal due to the current fading and flacking
and they do the basic work/sanding for the sealer

I took a look at a few cars at the shop... Including a 5 series beemer and it looked sweet. He admitted he gets lower in price since he doesn't remove anything thus no labor work like most shops, but it is painted by hand, and he said yes there may be tiny imperfections that come with it, but the sh*t does have a warrenty so I may just go for it..

I am going to paint it in Viper Blue if I do it. Some more Feedback would be helpfull as I check out a few other shops tomorrow.

for the love of God, PLEASE STAY AWAY from MAACO! You will be lucky if that paint lasts a year. Seriously, if you are going to get it painted, just get it painted well, unless you have a beater (which I'm assuming you don')...

Which MACCO did you go to because that seems like a good deal to me.
Its not like I have a show car and need a $5000 paint job.

4 coats of clear coat

sounds like crap. When a 2 stage paint job is performed, the base coat is sprayed on (matte finish), and Its almost hard to make it run, so 4 coats would be ok. But then to spray 4 coats of clear doesn't make sense, because typically anymore than 2 will run or crack. once I tried to spray 3 coats of clear, and it ran like crazy.
but I don't have too much expierience, so I don't know if a skilled professional could spray four.

They must mean 4 coats of clear with some wet sanding to make it smooth that would take off a few coats. Also, what does having a beater have to do with it?

Dude, any reputable body shop doesn't use 4 coats base, 4 coats clear. They spray until their is a mil thickness, then usually one good coat of clear then color sand and buff.

dsm style u should post pics of ur 91 wit da drift kit i've never seen them on 91.

once i get it here and it goes on I will. Right now the drift kits is on backorder so since I am inpatient I may just go with the 92-94 Eclipse Neo Combat VS front end as it is availble now.

I would go to a few local shops and see prices and work. Some times you could find a hella deal with some guy that enjoys doing it for cheap or atleast the same price but better job.

most macco's use sherwin wilums how ever u spell it paints the same we use at our body shop for our car dealership here in pa the paint and clear coats are pretty good from the store

4 coats of clearcoat? They must have money to waste.... I can almost guarantee they only do 2- 2 1/2 coats. Any more and the build will be too high, runs everywhere especially around sharp edges. The most you need to do is 3 coats, i think they are saying 4 coats because it sounds impressive.... After all, 2 coats doesnt sound like near enough! But those in the trade including myself know that not to be the case, the average punter doesnt know. Just a sales pitch if you ask me. The days of cellulose paint are long gone, when 4 coats would be the minimum required.

PS my car had between 2 1/2 and 3 coats of clearcoat 2-pack.

a freind of my dads did just that. he sander, prepped, and all that #@%#@%#@%#@%. took it to macco for a few hundred bucks. car looks GREAT. survived 2 ohio winters (woooh....LOL) but its still in good shape. i woudlnt let em do your sanding, priming, and definitly not the masking.

or

go there and ask to talk to the guy doing your car. tell him if your satisfied, he gets a lil cashflow on the side.

no update yet. i moved out of MN for a while, lost my job, and now just kinda waiting to sell some kits and pars to make the money to get the paintjob. on a side note i have a fried down here in IA that had a macco job on his cavalier 3 years ago and never had any touchup done... cost him little under $900 for everything including sanding and it still looks sweet as hell... so for a cheap paint job on a 1g that will be Rallying next season Macco seems like the way to go

Check spell and grammar check please.

As far as the topic, I wouldn't even consider them. I would find a local paint shop and pay the extra dollar to get better quality. Who the hell wants paint to start chipping a month after it's done, even with a warranty ?
