I redid my headliner in black and now i cant figure out how to take apart the visors to reupholster them. Anyone done this before?
thanks
anton

I would like to see them restitched when you're done. I'm in the same dilemma so I either have to find a shop or learn how to stich good.

The reason i was asking is that no shop i went to would take the job because they say that 80% of the visors break when you try to open them. I will do a writeup when i actually do it. I think the hardest part of this will be the taking apart part.

Thats where im going tomorrow. Find all types of cool crap I can sell on ebay.

I took both of mine apart to paint it black and it didn't break. I still have to find a shop to get them stitched.

They are not stitched. The interlocking teeth give the appearance of stitching along the edges. I got both of mine open without breaking them and re-upholstered with vinyl.

So all you have to do is get them apart and cut new fabric pieces? :D

Yup, it's a clam with teeth. The teeth secure the edges of the fabric. You will need to glue it back together to get it to stay. Choose a stretchy fabric or it will not conform to the contours.

I lost a visor in my old car....instead of replacing them or recovering them with the blue crushed velvet I did my headliner with,I shaved the dent smooth and completly got rid of the visors. As long as you have a dark enough tint strip across your windshield you shouldn't need them anyway.

If you don't mind the plastic feeling, I'm pretty sure plastic is black underneath the cloth. I need to do mine also.

But... where do you mount the Homelink?

The 1ga sun visors have a plastic core with some type of card board that folds in half and covers both sides. You have to cut them apart, then cover the card board with 1/4 low density headliner foam and them either use glue to reattach the card board to the plastic (which works like crap ) or you can just sitch around the outside edge about 1/4 in and it will look allot better that gluing them. Just don't try and stitch them on a regual sewing machine since it will break the needle and also might also bust the machine, you need an industrial sewing machine to stich that cardboard eaisly. Most interior shops will charge about $40-$60 to recover them completely including cost of the material.

On my 90 I just used some fabric and thin foam padding from the crafts section at Mall-Wart (Walmart) and 3M Spray adhesive from Home Despot. This is how you do it:

1. Cut the foam to size first

2. Adhere the bottom foam to the vizor, do NOT adhere the top yet.

You will be using a single piece of fabric to wrap the whole visor, starting at the bottom and wrapping around the back to the leading edge.

3. Glue the fabric to the bottom of the visor and wrap the front around the leading edge to hide it. Cut the fabric as necessary to keep it from buldging around the curves but be sure to not show any leading edge on the front side.

4. Glue the back of the top side foam down, leaving the leading edges free. Lay down a spray shield so you don't accidentally glue the edges down. You'll be wrapping the fabric around this edge before gluing the whole thing down.

5. Now lay the foam down and spray the top side of it. Wrap the fabric around the back side and glue it to the top of the foam.

6. Lift the foam edge and wrap the fabric around it just like you did with the bottom, watching for bludges still.

7. Glue the remaining pieces down making sure to not get any spray on the exposed fabric or you'll have dirt stuck to it in no time.

As long as you do a good job with cutting the edges of the foam and not lumping up the fabric it'll look fine. You can also run some edge beading material to make it look stitched. The whole thing should cost you under $10.

I'll do my passenger visor up soon and take pics if anyone wants 'em.

good luck with your visors....i took mine off and was trying to redo them with blue fabric...those things are hard as hell to wrap...maybe its just me...actually my fiancee tried....wasnt me...but i still have mine off and i think im going to just go without them...why do you really need them (for sun purposes) if you have sunglasses....they just block your view...but if you put a keyboard in them or something...then they become usefull....i would like to see that pic of the keyboard in the visor when its done...

I thought you were kidding until I saw the other post asking about that.

If you notice I said "my old car" which was a 91 Laser. Not sure I've seen many spyders with a headliner either but I could've left that out.

I would mount the homelink right on the headliner wherever it seemed convenient if I were doing this to a 2G.

Guess we overlooked the old car part of your post. The spyder does infact have its own unique headliner, which is way different from a coupes though.

Its damn sure different,I hate it....and the whole top for that matter, haha.

Just did mine last night and it looks awesome. I do it for side work so if ya need it done you can see I do good work
