Anyone know where to buy a Head Unit Touchscreen with these capabilities?

I'm posting this here, because I am trying to keep my system under wraps on the other forum until I am complete, as far as I know it will be original and I will be the only one who has this set up, so without going into to much detail....my only option I can think of is this.
I need a head unit with a pop-out LCD, but that lcd has to be a touch screen. Furthermore the head unit has to have inputs and allow me to 's navigate my trunk mounted laptop thru my head units LCD.
Perhaps there is a laptop output / video input converter I could buy

none.

Get/build an incar computer.

If you just want to view the truck mounted laptop on the screen, you can if your laptop has an S-video output. You cannot navigate your laptop through your lcd screen unless you get an in-car computer with an LCD screen like Attack Eagle said.

you are both wrong. here is a screen that works fine. i used it for my lap top in my eclipse. it has a vga in and a usb out. the usb allows you to use the touch screen as a mouse. also check out mp3car.com for other ideas. i am currently building my in-carpc into a box the size of a ps2. i plan to use it with msns. (no need for lap top to tune.) i would also reccomend frodoplayer for your screen front and earthmate for gps. this has been done before but is cool and still rare. good luck pm me if you need help.

I was hoping for a double din, but I can use my own pioneer and this, It should work perfectly. Thank you very much. That's exactly the type of unit I was looking for. After 4 local shops tell me they don't have this technology yet, I get on here and you have found it. :thumb:.

lots of ignorance in the world. there are cheaper ways of doing what you are trying to do. check out mp3car.com. go into the forums and check out the show off your project. you can buy a 8" touchscreen and fiberglass it into your double din. it looks clean. you would have to relocate your head unit. the 8" screen is alot cheaper than that pop out.
good luck

Doing the same thing, myself. Already have a suitable laptop that'll be stowed under the passenger seat, or just pick up a Carputer once they get a few more in stock, where I was looking.
Going to be running DSMLink through it for 'hidden' gauges, a CCD camera for driver's side b-pillar spotting, WinAMP or XMMS for in-car tunes (already have my head set up with an aux in for the computer) and so on.
Reluctant to buy one (already have a 5.5" LCD), but I need the touchscreen functionality... no futzing with a thumb mouse at 80mph. :) Plus the pop-out keeps it looking nice and clean... no aftermarket gauges to be seen at all. No car thief attention, or police attention. Just rig DSMLink with a MAP sensor and use the screen for boost, WBO2.. heck, EGT if I can figure a way to pipe it through.

Come to think of it, the 8" static double-din could be tempting. Set up Dragon NaturallySpeaking to an ambient mic, and pop on a decent vis... Knight Rider homage, anyone? :D

 -Please elaborate. I like the idea of having a LCD molded into my panel, but there is no where else to relocate my head unit. How are you going to set your HU to your laptop? Are you stating you will be able to operate your HU from the Touchscreen monitor?? Holy s*** that would be bad azz. I would defiently go this route if I found a HU that could be operated from the In dash LCD.
....So much for being original. :notgood: ....Going to have to look into the "carputer". I'm new to foreign vehicles and all this "fast and furious" (no pun intended) stuff is new to me.

Actually we ARE NOT.

That is not a head unit, that is flip out DIN sized computer touchscreen.

A head unit has at least Am/fm as an internal source, thus there ARE NO head units that will do it.
But yes you could use the same flip out screens that the in car guys use, but at that point WHY? Why not jsut build and hardwire an incar so you would have it hardwired to everything, and then network the laptop in to transfer files? If not you won't even have radio if you disco the laptop, and performance driving with a trunk mounted laptop is generally certain death for the laptop.

NO you would have to download programs to make your laptop into a cd player/dvd player. and wire up something to make it into a radio.

The idea is cool, except, do you wanna go to the trunk to change CD's? No. DO you want to clutter up your drive with music and movies? not really. And do you want to have no radio or entertainment in the trunk w/o the laptop connected? no.
Check out MP# car forums... the only problem is if you buy everything NEW... you might as well buy a top of the line Alpine head unit with all the gizmos for the price you would end up paying. that is why I never did it.

If I went with the flip-out unit, I would keep my laptop and plug it in as I needed. Keep my head unit directly underneath the flip-out touchscreen. My head unit has an AUX IN, that I would then plug into the laptop, and play MP3s off the laptop. It *would* be controlled from the touchscreen at that point, but the head unit is just a 'converter', essentially.

If I went for the permanent-mount 8" screen, I'd have to go with a permanently mounted Carputer, probably with wifi and at least 160GB of storage. Toss ALL my music in there, as well as movies and a few games. Then run the output from the carputer's audio-out to a powered amp, and then to the speakers. It'd essentially become the new head unit, though remotely mounted and touchscreen controlled. Also thinking of finding something along the lines of a CB module for it, if I have the money left over... never underestimate how useful the CB chatter is when you're on a long trip. Truckers tend to warn about speed traps and such, and if you break down in the middle of nowhere, it's a good way to get help. Usually a hell of a lot faster than calling AAA.

Actually that pop out screen is exactly what I was looking for. I want to keep my single DIN head unit and have the pop up screen right above it tied into a carputer. This way I can hide the screen and do not have to customize anything to pop in my cd's.

.
and all for under $300,, assuming you have an old laptop. I don't care how "good" a full sized LCD looks. To many disadvantages such as cd's, radio tuning a pita, etc.....
This is what I'm going to do, then just add an xbox and rca splitter... Thanks again, this information has been invaluable..hey selmerguy...I see your in Leonardwood. What a **it hole man. I feel sorry for ya....

When you buy the flip-out LCD, check the specs. If you get one with a VGA input for the laptop, usually it will have a secondary RCA-in for something like a back-up camera or xbox. Then just get an RCA->headphone adapter and plug it into the laptop audio line-in, use the lappy as a passthrough for the video game sound. :) No need to screw around with a switcher box at that point, plus the sound should be normalized. No worries about swapping to the video game and have it BLARING, or vice-versa when you go back to the regular music.

very true selmer...

hey guys

pioneer avic-n2

popout touchscreen, navigation, voice/remote control, mp3/dvd/fm/am, 3 aux inputs and an output, and it still functions as a normal cd player when the screen is in....

booyah.

:thumb: :thumb: :thumb: . To bad the price is so damn high.. I could blow my bestbuy deck from 3 years ago and use it towards a new one....But for $2000 its not worth it. Ebay has them for $1000 after rebate... western union and ebay and a chinese seller for $250.00....hmmmmmmm...wonder how much western union and customs is going to cost me..or if I would ever see my money again.
EDIT : acutally after reviewing the HU I noticed it is a A/V output. Even though I would have the laptop displayed on the lcd there is no way the laptop would understand that I was touching the icon to open the software..It simply allows for a second monitor to be installed. +1 for the info anyways.

I am waiting for the price to go under 500 and I am going to get one. Someone at bestbuy told me that I can get a hard drive accessory for the unit and store music, games or anything I want on it. There has to be a way for it to communicate with a laptop if it can communicate with the harddrive.
