I just picked up a 98 tsi the car looks awsome but the damn spoiler has what looks like oxidation, its a kinda chalky white stuff. the car is black any detailers know what i can do to fix it without getting it painted

That car seems to young to be going through that stage of its life. Yet, Defiant is a mod for a reason I agree with him!

you could try using a random orbit buffer and some abrasive cutting compound folowed up by polish and then wax and see how that goes. However you have the chance to really screw up your paint if you don't know what you are doing with the orbital buffer so caution is recomended.

It's not too early. My whole car is covered in that crap.

Damn consumerism.

my brother had that problem with his black car (his old one), he lived with it for a while, but got his whole car repainted, got rid of it... i guess it's not the whole car, so i would just get it repainted or something, i dont think it would break your wallet either.

defiant is right " death of clearcoat" is exactly what it is. no amount of polishing and glazing will be able to "fix" it. However I have found that if you use a color cordinated wax....black wax for a black car......that is a temporary fix until it rains or you wash the car, I like to call this metheod putting on her makeup. other than that start getting quotes on a repaint.

im suposed to pick her up friday the guy said i could just buff it out.. let me know your thoughts on the price. its for my girl. its a 98 tsi no mods at all. black, tan leather and its a auto and has 137k dude wants 6k

i'd say thats somewhat of a fair price, high miles though, just make sure it's been maintained well, and that it runs fine, i paid $11,500 for mine, had 49,000 miles on it,he had put a couple dollars into it for mods, it's a good thing i had a $6,000 quad sitting in my garage, otherwise i dont know how i would pay for it... haha :dsm:

i just went through edmunds on it, with a 98 talon tsi, black, leather, all of the options, in clean condition,137K miles, and private party was $4,900 and dealer retail was $6,137... so i'd say he is in the range, maybe on the high side, but even if you talk him down, sales tax and licensing will get you back up to 6K or so, my car was $867 for that (i live in MN)not sure what it'd be where you are from.

its a fwd turbo.. its a friend of mine. some kid couldnt pay for his bill so he sold it to him for 1,000 bucks.. but it needs a new motor that he has allready got but i dont think its new. also reason the motor blew he was going like 80 and droped it in 1st gear. i dont know nothin about a auto but he said the tranny should be fine hes going to drive it around to make sure but that kinda bothers me a lil.

A picture would really help in this situation. If it is truly oxidation, then a good oxidation remover then a polish/wax will bring it right back.
But if it's the clearcoat flaking away, then basically your best bet would be to take the spoiler off, wetsand it with some fine grit sand paper to even out/remove the clearcoat, then get it re-cleared.
