What is this trim piece called, mine is metal and all the paint is flaking off, im sure alot of others have had this problem because iv seen it numerous times are 2ga cars. My friend has a 97 NT and his are rubber, im hoping i can buy those somewhere online and get mine replaced. I would repaint them but they are all chipped up also so that would be pointless. Thanks alot.

None of them are painted metal. They are all rubber coated metal but over time, the rubber begins to dryrot, crack, and peel.

a quick fix would be to remove them and paint them gloss black. they look just as good. thats what i did.

I replaced the uppers and lowers when I did my conversion. Its worth it to replace them but if you dont have the money, just do a search on upper door trim and find out the best method for painting them.

Painting them would be the choice to go, I mean what would you radther spend 3 bucks for a spray can or 40 some dollars?

Since the trim pieces are rubber coated metal, it is nearly impossible to get the surface smooth and ready to be repainted. The rubber, unlike paint, just won't feather properly. I found that the best method is to remove any loose pieces with a razor, and then to apply a thin coat of glazing putty over that. The glazing putty will create a smooth transition that you can sand with 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Then just apply a layer or two of aerosol filling primer (with some more sanding of course), and then you're ready for paint. :thumb:

painting them doesnt look right. It leaves a big gap because the rubber extends past the metal plate. To remove, pull out the rubber door jam, but be careful as it is connected at both ends of the door. You will find a load of screws to have fun with. Your going to have to pull hard to get the rubberjam out, dont be a ####y.
