My front bumper is all f***ed up and I'm looking to replace it with an aftermarket one that looks just like the oem one. I found this on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7927977952

when I asked what material it was made of, they told me it was POLYPROPYLENE.

Will that type of material crack like fiberglass if my front bumper hits the ground?

Also how does the price on that one look like? Is it expensive or is it the right price?

Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Polyurethane maybe?? Ive never heard of polypropylene ... sure they not what they're talking about?

Polyurethane is super strong stuff, but I looked at your pics of your car and I see a small amount of bumper roughage but why not have that smoothed out and get it repainted? Would be alot cheaper. Dont forget about ship costs ...

Peace!

Yea, unless the damage you are referring to isn't in your gallery, I'd say just sand down the front bumper and have it repainted. I did that to get rid of all the rock chips and scratches on the bottom and it looks great now. I'd stick with the parts that came on your car as those ebay kits (urethane or fiberglass) tend to need lots of 'custom fabrication' to fit.

As for Polypropylene, it is used to make dishwasher-safe food containers, that fake grass/carpet you see at golf courses, and some European car companies are making interior parts out of it. I have not had any experience with it though...I would stick with stock urethane.

The bodyshop I went to said they would charge me over 400 to repaired my current bumper and paint it. That seems a little high to me. That's why I was looking at getting a new aftermarket one. The pictures in my gallery are kind of old and the bumper is in a little bit worse condition than that on the pictures.

I think I'm going to go around to different shops to see if I can find somebody who can repair it for $300 or less.

Hey! I've been a chemist for almost 10 years now.

PPE is polyproplyene ,a REALLY flexible plastic. It's been around a while and is really common. It's typically formed into super flexible bottles that are almost clear. You know: dish washing detergent, milk, (squeeze bottle) salad dressing. PPE is not typically see through. It has a layer of cloudiness to it.

samuraitekno Antifreeze is ethylene glycol

yeah i got one made of thaat poly plastic crap its almost like oem it wont crack and it wont chip . but it depend whats ur hiting LOL it fades and scratched just liek the oem does. perfect fitment and so on. very flexiable. well there my 2 cents

are you thinking of polyeurethane? cause ive only heard of 2 different styles of aftermarket bumbers, polyurethane and fiberglass. good thing about fiberglass is when its damaged its easy fix. polyurethane, if it cracks, its doneski. but fiberglass needs some labor and sometimes custom fitting to install, whereas polyurethane supposedly just slides right over the stock bumpers.

Well, thanks for all the info. I just want my front bumper fixed or repaired. Which ever can be done for $300 or less, is the one I'll go with. I just want the bumper to be flexible. Every time I exit the parking lot in the apartment complex I live in, the bumper rubs on the ground a little bit. It depends on how carefull I am. But there are times I'm in a hurry and I forget. So I'll do some research and see what I can do with $300 budget.

Thanks again for all the info.

Miguel

Everything will crack. Just depends on how hard you hit it, and what the temperature is. Infact, I just cracked my polyurethane front bumber the other night on the first cold night we have had around here.
