The Unofficial Official 2G headlight/taillight difference A/B faq

After seeing the same questions crop up weekly and often even daily regarding headlights and taillights for the 2g DSM, I've decided that an faq is in order rather than spending hours a month answering each one individually.

Headlights:
First let us note the difference between 2ga and 2gb headlights.
[See first picture, below]

Will 2ga lights fit a 2gb bumper?
No, it will look like this:
[See second picture, below]

Will 2gb lights fit a 2ga bumper?
Yes, but it will look like this:
[Below]
What aftermarket headlights can I buy for my 2g?
There are several companies producing aftermarket headlights in the projector style.
APC amoung others have both chrome and black housed projectors.

My headlights are fogged up what can I do?
Check these tech articles:

http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=113806
http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98500

Can I buy just the clear lens to replaced my fogged lights?
No, so far no one produces just the lens.

I saw some factory lights with clear corners, how can i do this?
This is usually done by baking the headlight and removing the lens, for more information check this tech article: http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98500

I saw some factory lights that had the same color housing as the paint (or custom colored housings) how can i do this?
This also involves baking the headlight and removing the lens, for more information refer to this tech article:
http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98500

How the hell do I remove the headlights from my 2g?
Good question, Mitsu engineers don't like to make life easy, but there is an answer for you in this tech article:
http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=99973

Has anyone ever done a headlight conversion on a 2g?
Yes.

How can I convert my headlights to (insert whatever car you're using as a doner here) style headlights?
There are no hard and fast rules and it is not an easy process, it involves incredible ammounts of time, bodywork, pain, and electrical know how. Odds are if you don't know how to do the conversion you shouldn't be considering it, but if you insist on proceeding I wish you the best of luck.

Taillights:
Will Eclipse tails fit my talon?
Not without converting the rear end to an eclipse.
Does anyone make Altezza, JDM, or Euro style taillights for the 2g?
Yes, a search on ebay will yield the results you seek.

Has anyone ever painted the center taillight piece on a 2g?
Yes.

I saw a 2g with a painted center taillight piece how can i do this?
Remove the interior trim piece inside the hatch where the latch is. See the big long bolts? Grab a deep socket and get to work, unplug the wiring harness and it'll come right out. Now take it to your favorite paint shop and have it shot the color you want.

Has anyone done a taillight conversion on a 2g?
Yes.

I saw Supra Taillights on a 2g, how can i do that?
There are conversion kits avilable to achieve this, or you can do it by hand.

Misc:

I'm buying a bodykit for my 2g, how do i know if the front bumper is for 2ga or 2gb lights?
Call the manufacturer of the kit, they are the only ones who will know for certain.

I bought a bodykit for my 2g, but the front bumper doesn't fit the headlights correctly is there a fix?
Yes, likely you have a bumper for the opposite style lights, (ie you have 2ga lights and a 2gb bumper) you can either fill/cut the bumper to fit correctly or you can swap out your headlights to the appropriate style.

Thanks to the following people who knowingly or unknowingly contributed to this by saving me the time and energy of having the pictures taken or artices already writen.

If anyone knows of more faqs for headlights or taillights pm me and I'll add them to the list to try and keep it clean. Thanks!

I may have missed it but is there a difference between 95 talon headlights and 97 or 98 talon headlights when they changed the bumper style?

No, Talon headlights never changed. That's what "ALL TALONS" means in the first damned picture.

2G headlight question

After searching and reading a couple of threads I found that you can not simply swap out the black headlights from a 97-99 to a 95. My question is what is the difference between the two headlight styles? I would assume it is simply the shape but, I was just curious to found out if that is it or if there are other things as well. Any information is appreciated. Thanks.

Basically they are just shaped different, and the 95 bumper won't fit. They still bolt right on with no modification though.

Check the thread/sticky on Eclipse/Talon headlights. It tells how to disassemble the headlights and reassemble them. Thanks to the thread, my son was able to disassemble his headlights, paint the interior body color and reassemble them. They look killer. I will post pics of the completed project after we repaint the car.

The headlights 2ga or 2gb all use the same connectors, ASSUMING you have purchased OEM headlights.

If its from ebay, it may vary, especially if its the current batch of dual projectors with halos. Those are not plug and play, but you can make it, if you use common sense.

Here is a hint, cut the harness from your old 2ga lights, wire them appropriately with the ebay headlight wiring, then plug and play to stock harness.

Well I had 2gb Eclipse headlights on my '95 Talon... previous owner put them on not sure why... I bought headlights that were supposedly from a '97 Talon and I have the same gap as I did with the Eclipse headlights.

then they are still 2gb headlights.

See picture above...
ALL 2ga headlights and 2gb TALON headlights are the wider 'chrome' versions.
Again, Early eclipse and ALL TALON are the wide version.
IF you have a talon nose and a gap, then you have later 2gb style headlights... whether they are chrome (aftermarket) ones or not

You certainly can disassemble the OEM chrome wide lenses (baking headlights)
take out the chrome insert,
spray it with oven cleaner to de-chrome it (old model car trick that works great) in about 60 seconds,
wash it in hot soapy water to remove the residue
and spray them fusion satin black for the same look as the later headlight...

Makes a HUGE difference.

my old TSiAWD...

predator

(BTW if you change the low-beam headlight connector for a high-beam connector while they are apart, and use a pair of dykes to nip about 2mm of the rib that interferes with the high-beam bulb seating properly, you can have plug n play 9005 low-beams... major difference in usable light... and beats the pants off modding the bulbs to fit.

Thats true... 95-98 Talons have the Same headlights as a 95-96 Eclipse would. Now the 97-99 Eclipse Headlights are different, they are a little shorter the the longer ones

Ij you use a 97-99 bumper you need 97-99 headlights or there will be a large gap between lights and bumper cover.

Wow!!!! Came across this by total chance. My friend bought 95 headlights for his eclipse but his bumper is a 98 so they didn't fit properly and were sticking out, couldn't even bolt right on. We had no idea why and now we do! Props man thanks a lot for making this!!!!!
