Does anyone have a 3 inch downpipe? I was at a local muffler shop and they said that they could not make a 3 inch downpipe cause it would be hitting ac lines and the radiator hose. Hahn sells one but i dont wanna pay that much for it. Pictures would be nice. :thumb: :dsm: :thumb:

Just start out with an opening the size of your turbo inlet (2"-2.5"), then turn it into 3" as it comes down farther, then bam, 3" downpipe. They probably won't do it if you get rid of your cat, so consider buying a highflow cat.

Thats what the guy at the local muffler shop said start out with the 2.25 inch or what ever it is and then go 3 inch. He didnt say anything about the cat cause i dont have one on had it removed long ago. I have this http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/QTEC/ to install so thats why i want a 3 inch down pipe. I just what 3 inches from the turbo to cutout then back down to stock size piping. :dsm: :thumb: :dsm:

that is how the hahn pipe does
2.5 at the opening and then back to 3

it comes out and curves real quick back under itself to clear everything

Yeah dude, expect to have to remove your AC lines and stuff like that in order to make a 3" opening. I bet your turbo doesn't even have that big of an opening, and I bet it would serve you better to just make it go from 2.25" to 3" and then put your cut out in there.

Your right i dont even have a 3 inch opening on my outlet of the turbo. I though Hahns 3 inch downpipe was 3 inches to begin with. :dsm: :thumb: :dsm:

It depends on the turbo you have, but almost no turbo starts with a full 3" opening, (depending on the trim level of the opening ya know).

The hahn one is probably going to be made for their turbo openings and then come out to 3". I havne't looked at one, but I bet its a 2.25"-2.5" opening

its not always good to start big like welding a 3" pipe to a flange with a 2.5" because it will cause the exhaust to spin for lack of a better word and reduce flow the best is a smooth transition from the opening on the turbo to the size you want. post pics when you are all done :thumb:

i just put my hahn dp on

definetly 2 1/2 at the turbo opening

and yes you do have to move the ac lines out of the way
not much but the aluminum pipes had to bent about 1/2 inch away from the engine to get the dp in and still have clearance.

definetly had to wrap them after they are bent

We made a 3" dp for my friend's setup but then again he also has his ac and ps removed, but the radiator hose hasnt been a problem.
Heres a pic of the creation process after he welded it all up we used that ceramic coating in the rattle can on it and it worked and looks great.

I too have a 3'' DP but my t3 flange is central mounted and my DP was press bent but I do have one. Ill get a pic

What you cant see in that picture is how much room there is between the DP and power steering ect. If i were to move the turbo over like hahn's, it could still be done. I would need a little more bend to still get the end of the top section to end up in the middle of the oil pan. My DP is two pieces for an easier engine removal.

So in the pictures in the linke, your saying that at the turbo opening the pipe starts off being 3" big, and not matched to the size of the turbo opening and then goes right to 3"?

That is correct, the turbo outlet is 2.5 roughly and the DP is 3". i honestly dont see a transition that small and at that location as that important of a factory to exhaust flow. Apparently neither does Hahn because his transition as pretty much immediate. His purpose was more for bolt access.

That's pretty rad ESI-T!!! How much did it cost you and how long did it take? It looks really clean. I want to do the same thing...Where did you get all the pipe and what pieces of piping did you get to put it together.? If you make another one I'd be interested...How much? Once again it looks great. Keep up the good work man. :thumb:

Well with that pipe I order the 3" piping I need, flex section, flanges, gaskets, and o2 fittings. Basically its close to 140.00 in material. Takes about 6 hours to complete with all the fitting and welding. The wastegate tube dumps back into the pipe, that takes just under 2 hours complete in itself. I am rather anal with my work so that adds a little time as well.

As far as making one, only 1 person has a duplicate and his is slightly different for the same setup. Each one gets made as a 1 off. I dont use a jig because i dont plan on making them. Mine will only fit the Star Turbo kit since thats what mine started out to be.

Also keep in mind the DP is all 3" meaning you would need a 3" cat and a shop to match the flanges of the 3" cat to the DP.

I charge 300.00 to make them. Considering time and material thats not an unfair price. Mine is ceramic coated and I think I paid another 125 or 150 for that as well.

Right now if you seriously wanted on and had the same setup, you would have to wait about a month before I could do it. I am kinda tied up with Megasquirt kits and custom fuel rails for a couple 2GNT members.

I do have the star kit...I would eventually want to...could I contact you possibly when I am ready...b/c I too have other things that are higher priority than a DP, and the price isn't too bad. I have the delta gate wastegate...it looks like you have some different one, is dumping the wastegate tube into the DP the only way to get it too work w/ that setup? Anyway...thanks Terry I will let you know down the rode if I am still interested...the DP looks great...a really smooth transition. Keep up the good work. :rocks:

I have the Tial 38mm 'Gate, its the exact same mount as the Deltagate. I eventually upgraded my wastegate. I choose to dump into the DP but you can dump to atmosphere if you like, that is pretty much your call.

If you are interested down the road hti me up and i will see what i can do for you.
