I am always finding ways to increase the fuel economy on my DSM. Would installing a taller fifth gear on my five-speed transmission be worth the expense? What kind of mileage increase might I expect on the highway?

Thank you for your time.

Just install a neon tranny. Same trans just a different final drive ratio.

I put an eclipse trans in my neon and the rpm in 5th @ 70 mph went from 2800 to 3700. So approx from 35 mpg to 32 ish.

I might actually do this when my stock manual tranny fails. I would rather pay for 2,857 gallons of fuel every 100,000 miles as opposed to 3,125 gallons. I plan on driving this car at least 100,000 miles before I get a different car. At $3.70 a gallon that's $10,570.90 vs. $11,562.50. A savings of $991.60 over 100,000 miles. Not much really but worth it if you are putting in a new tranny anyway. And this is considering all highway miles...
