Ok, I know this sounds like another thread about fluid in the NV-350T Trans but its not and I really need input on this.

So my car is a 97 GS. This morning I drove it after trying a bunch of different things to try to get it to shift right. I found out that my syncro's for 1st thru 3rd may be bad.

My question is this: If I am not running the right viscosity of fluid will it cause the problem I am having. I used the fluid from the dealer for the trans and it grinds a little in the first 3 gears but 4th, 5th, and Rev are fine. I have read that if you upgrade from the paper backed syncros you should use a heavier gear oil than that from the dealer. Would the lighter oil cause it to grind a little?

The original problem is here

use redline MT85. its specifically designed for the dsm tranny and the synchros. its fairly new. is this gear oil related? well probably not it does sound like a synchro going bad BUT if anything will help with grinds and prolonging them its this stuff.

btw the link doesnt work for me.

But the problem I im having believing that its the syncros is this: The fluid that came out of the trans was thicker than the stuff I put back in. Thats why I am thinking its the fluid. I bought the car used and dont know what was fixed/replaced before I got it.

Im sorry the link didnt work. But thanks for letting me know

We are not discussing DSM transmissions though - this is a NV-T350.

OP - I cannot answer your question completely, but I would not stray from factory recommended fluid, unless you had your transmission rebuilt with specific fluid recommendations from the builder.

I personally run Valvoline VR1 10w30 in my trans, but that is under the instruction of the builder.

EDIT: If looking for aftermarket compatible fluids, you want something that satisfies the Chrysler MS-9224, MS-9417, or part #04874465.

See thats just the problem. I dont know if it was ever rebuilt, for all I know the thing could have been rebuilt. I drove almost 10 hours to get the car off a used car dealer in Kentucky. Im in PA, didnt get any info about the car at all. Except they bought it at auction. I mean the fluid that came out WAS thicker than the stock NV-350T fluid. Almost like 10w40 motor oil. My question is will the difference in viscosity cause it to grind a little because the fluid is too thin and not lubricating the internals correctly?

Well, the only way you are going to find out is by disassembling the gear clusters to find out what synchros it has. If you are unsure, either try the OEM MOPAR T350 gear oil or Amsoil Synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid - AMSOIL - Synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid (MTF) - which is recommended as a manufacturer replacement fluid. The amsoil stuff already has a friction modifier in withthe gear oil so nothing needs to be added if it goes into a paper or a brass synchro transmission. The Amsoil stuff can also go into a T850 SRT4 transmission without any friction additives added (which has paper synchros also and normally uses ATF+4 AND the MOPAR friction additive).

The AMSOIL stuff can be used with paper or brass synchros without issues.
