1. Yes
2. Yes
3. I have heard bad things, and good about them. I personally would not run them I run JE.
4. I don't know I drive a car with the 420a.

1) Crank is the same as a turbo one. Will hold 400HP. You won't make 400HP without forced air.

2) Yes

3) Don't know about them.

4) For NO lifter tick, go 3gen lifters. Use stock springs and reground cams for your engine application.

You won't be able to keep up with your camaro and mustang friends though. Most of those mods aren't directly perfomance gaining mods. They are mostly engine buildup mods so you can safely make a ton of HP.

One of the reasons why I don't post at this board much. I may buy a TSi one day, but I won't sell my ESi to do so.

i have a bunch of questions
I will try to answer

1. the crank had to be turned will it still be strong enough to handle mild horsepower??
like was said above, you should be okay. It will very hard to make a load of horsepower NA without shoe-horning a larger engine in there.

2. are eagle rods any good
I have the Eagle H-rods in my 420A right now. 5,000 miles after rebuild and I have no problems at all. IMO, a quality product.

3. wiseco pistons any body have em .030 over
Currently running Wiesco 10.5:1 CR with a .020" overbore. Again, no problems and higher compression is much fun.

4.what cams, lifters,springs
Depending on which cams you pick, you can see some decent gains if you've opened up your intake/exhaust sufficiently tro make better sue of the new flow characteristics. I've heard of some people picking up 20-30chp with cams after they take care of the rest of their airflow issues.
Lifters, springs, retainers etc. are a good idea to help strengthen your head. You'll come across Titanium components which are very nice and very sexy to mention when talking about your internals, but the greatest gains you would see (aside from the improved strenght they offer) is that they are lighter weight which can help improve throttle response.

As much as I would love to tell you you'll be walking GTs and Z28s in NA trim, I can't. To get a normally aspirated 2.0L above 200hp at the crank is possible, but very expensive. You could go for some crazy high CR, but you'll lose your driveability in the process. If you're aiming for a daily driver that you can have some serious fun with and maybe even surprise the occasional turbo car (by making him have to work a bit more to walk you), staying NA is a great game plan.

Added bonus: rebuild the motor youself and you will gain an invaluable amount of knowledge about tuning most any car. You may not be as fast as that GST, but I would hope he would respect the fact that you did all the work yourself. The true enthusiasts always respect those who do the work themselves.

words of a very wise man dr. i must say i respect your opinion about the guy will respect you did it yourself, well said and much props to a true sportsman...:thumb: : :dsm: :talon: : :dsm: :talon: :dsm: :talon: :dsm: :talon:

Thank you! Same to you for not selling it and buying a turbo. :p

all i wanna say is that don't sweat a camaro or mustang..all though some hall ass other are overrated...i traded my 92 25th anniversary edition camaro for my eclipse after i got dusted by my boys stick 2.2 (non v tec) f22 honda accord (that and the fact i missed imports)...i have also seen a v8 camaro get smoked by a neon with some aftermarket mods...camaros and mustangs hall ass in top end...but don't be intimidated by them...and if your gonna rebuild the engine you might as well take time and some money and do it right the first time...if you run into problems later then your gonna kick yourself in the ass

I would say continue to do your homework and research the different avenues you could pursue. You could stay stock CR, you could drop the CR to prepare for running higher boost, or you could up the CR and play around all-motor for a while. Maybe throw her on the bottle.

The important thing is to be sure that when you're done you have a car that you enjoy driving everyday. #### the other guys. It's your car, you can do what you want with it. :thumb:

im about to rebuild my 420a due to a spun rod bearing as well.. im going to buy the howell automotive bottom end kit which includes:

Clevite 77 or Federal Mogul Rod Bearing Set Clevite 77 or Federal Mogul Main Bearing Set Total Seal Piston Rings Mopar Oil Pan Gasket Set (includes rear main seal) Melling Oil Pump Eagle Specialty Forged Rods JE Pistons

and like i said a spun a bearing so what am i gonna hafta get done to the crank for it handle high hp... because im building this car to run boost...i dont wanna any screw ups

is there anything else i need to look into?
should i go w/ the 8.6 pistons?? (lowest)
any advice at all about rebuilding would be appreciated,
SOMEBODY PLEASE ANSWER THIS POST
thanx -charlie-

keep rockin the 420a'S!!

As good as Howell is to us 420A people, you might want to check out www.gottude.com and get int contact with Bill (MotoFool). He was a pretty active memeber of the 2GNT community who sells rebuild kits. I got mine from him for $1100 shipped and everything came to me really quick. He has the same parts too. You just save amybe $50 or so. PLUS, he's much more accessible than Howell is when you have questions. He even found me a machine shop locally to handle my boring/honing.

You will need to have your crank remachined so that eveything is true and balanced. Thses cranks are pretty damn stout imo. I think it weighs close to 50lbs by itself. A decent machine shop should be able to evaluate your crank and get it back in line all nice.

As for the pistons, you do know the 420A runs 9.6:1 CR stock don't you? If you go to 8.6:1, you WILL lose 4% of your horsepower. It's a proven fact that 1pt of CR is equal to 4% HP. Now if you're going to drop in a turbo in the NEAR future, you may want to drop your CR like that to give you an added margin of safety when tuning to prevent detonation, but if you're not going turbo soon, you will definitely FEEL slower and I doubt you want that right after dropping some serious cash into a rebuild.

I myself went with the 10.5:1CR Wiescos as I'm looking to know how to tune for 200 hp NA before I get involved with turbo. IF I go turbo, I will likely just be looking into a small one.

Like I said above, do your homework. You don't have to constrain all your research to this board either. There is a wealth of information over at 2GNT.com since we are predominately NT DSMs.

Just take your time and do it right the first time man. :thumb: :talon:
