I was looking into getting the howell automotive af/x ecu for my 97 gs, However, in reading some stuff about it, most people say that it just advances timing and because of that you have to use 93+ octance gas. Well, since i live in Utah, the highest octance they sell is 91. Will using 91 octane and the af/x ecu destroy my engine??

3HP???? ARE YOU SURE. THE PEOPLE WHO I HAVE TALKED TO THAT HAVE THIS SAID IT MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE. AND IN THE STAGES SECTION OF 2GNT, IT SAID THAT IT SHOULD DYNO AROUND 10-15 HP. PLEASE KEEP THE THOUGHTS COMING!

Sorry about all the caps lock in the last post. Please dont flame me. I am required at my job to do everything caps lock and just forgot to take it off.

You'l be able to get by on 91 octane, the only thing is that if you ever plan on going the turbo route then you might as well forget it since the advance in timing will not play well with boost. As far as I know, everyone that is staying NA and has gotten it has been extremely pleased.....

If your staying NA then the ECU is a worthy upgrade, probably the best bang for the buck if staying NA. Most people have dynoed at a 9-12whp gain from just the ECU. You should be fine on 91 octane.

i don't know wat happened to the dyno for that thing. dino and avenger tested it themselves and posted it showing gains from 15 whp at start tapering down to about 5 whp at redline. can't find it anywhere now.

I just went to howell automotive and couldn't find the af/x ecu? What do you look under? How much are they charging? Thanks

I wouldn't buy it dude. You MIGHT get like 3hp. Don't bother.

hahahaha:laugh: he's funny. but yeah, what the other guy said, if you plan on going turbo, you'll have to retard the hell out of it and then you'll be almost back to stock ecu settings.

dont they sell octaine booster :) we get 93 here but i use octaine booster soemtimes, makes my car run abit smoother.

Get the ECU if you will not turbo in the future. It will give you much more than 3 HP. Also thet dyno that was done, was in the first 10 min of the ECU being on the car. It didn't even have time to learn how to operate the car yet. Imagine after 2 days of running in the car how it would do. Think about it like this, That dyno was like dynoing an untuned turbo car that runs pig rich. Once you tune it the numbers go up.

I got a DFI 6 from Howell. Can I use that for my 420a? (when it goes turbo)

But I wanna use it as a stand alone. Gary said he's never done it, and he said HRC uses them as piggybacks, but a friend of mine has it in his 1g with just MSD ignition and a mx-6 distributor. So if the distributor is custom, he can match it up with the proper ignition box (Crane) , and siad its probable and go from there.
