Hey I'm new to this forum and a new owner of a 1997 Eclipse GS with the chrysler engine .I was wondering what kind of engine swaps could I do to my 97 eclipse, from what cars? Could I do a Lancer engine swap?

ANY engine swaps are possible, except for some crazy ill-thought plans like a Viper V-10 in a Geo Metro...you just have to have the tools, parts, knowledge, know-how and cash!

unfortunatly, engine swaps in the 2g eclipse are long, hard, costly and ususally don't end up working properly....however there are many options for more power- turbo, n20 and larger displacement 420a....check out Howell Automotive they have one of the only real "swaps" available, basically its a 2.2Litre stroker...they have taken the 2.0l block and added longer rods, hence more displacement. it is however costly, i would reccomend turbo....cause frankly there is nothing like the feel of a turbo spooling :thumb:

you could do a swap but it would cost ALOT OF MONEY!!! to do it to our car, it's not worth it and with the amount of money you would spend you putting a stock motor you could turbo and re-build and have more power. So what Iam talling you is dont swap your motor you have a bad ass motor all you need to do is turbo it and re-build and you will have all the power you will need.

The 420a is a bad ass motor if built properly so if i was you i would keep it. But I dont know if it has been done or if all the motor mounts line up, the EVO 4 and up have the tranny on the same side as our N/T cars. I think it would be a bad ass swap but i dont know how difficuld it would be.

P.S. i think its the EVO 4 it might be the 3 or 5 though, and good luck with whatever decision you make:laser:

YOU WILL PROBALY END UP SPENDING TO MUCH MONEY SO
IF YOUR DOWN WITH THAT I WOULD JUST BUILD YOUR 420A
GET A STRKER FROM HOWELLAUTOMOTIVE AND A HRC KIT THAT WOULD GIVE YOU SOME POWER

I agree with Black-Ninja. The 2.2 howell bottom end and a Hahn stage 2 with front mount intercooler is what i paln for my 97 RS. And Does anybody have some factory side skirts they might want to get rid of?

they only similarity that the 420a and 4g63 share is the fact that they are both 4cyl engines....after that they are totally different...for starters--they are mounted opposite and the tranny is on the opposite side...one is turbo, one is not, the 4g63 can have crankwalk, although it is rare, the 420a can have headgasket problems although it is rare....both are very strong engines that can do amazing things when properly built...but for what you want, a swap isn't practical, just buy a turbo kit, forged internals and go stomp on 4G63's....cause i have ridden in both at 15psi and the 4g63 wouldn't stand a chance against a 15psi 420a :shhh:

You are right about everything about the 4g63 being different from the 420a accept on the EVO 4 to Evo 8 4g63's the tranny is on the same side. if tou dont believe me go to the Mitsubishi dealer and take a look for yourself. Im not tryin to be stubborn and argue just let people know if the dont already. I do agree with you about building the bottom end on the 420a and then slaping a turbo on there. Cause that just so happens to be the plans for my 97 rs.

its kinda funny how u 4g63 guys hate our 420a so much. i mean u must have some interest in them otherwise u guys wouldent be coming into the non turbo forum. and on top of that there is a Eclipse RS running a 9.3 1/4 with an automatic and it still has some time to cut off that 9.3 because of traction problems. im not sure and may be wrong but i dont think that 4g63 are running much faster. yea the 4g63 is running faster times but it also has the advantage of being around about 5 years longer for people to tune.

did someone say 420 ... oh the ENGINE!
naa j/k! Here is my thoughts, I was thinking the same thing, "man what could I do to make this car faster" ... SWAP, REBUILD, ETC... well here is my .02! I'm going with the 2.2litre shortblock from www.rpmextreme.com then when I'm pushing around 200hp(notice I said around) ALL MOTOR ... I will save my pennies and throw on a TURBO ...... then what will you 4g63 guys be in for ... ONE FAST ASS RS ......... I LOVE IT, makes me wish I never took the RS sticker off the back!
