Are hi-flo cats legal in most states?

I've been looking into upgrading my entire exhaust from the headers all the way back, and I was wondering if I should leave the stock cat on there. I would just put in a straight pipe, but this is a daily driver that I want to pass inspection (and keep my wife from stressin' about the legality of my car). Does anyone know where I can find out (I already used the search, and didn't find anything)? Thanks in advance.

 :dsm:

its illegal to remove your cat in any state, your only suppose to use a high flow for off road purposes...wink wink...nudge nudge.

theoretically, a high flow cat is a cat converter so it would be legal.. however...., its a federal law that you are not allowed to remove a working cat. so if your cat was not working correctly, you could replace it with a high flow cat

Well, both answers make sense, based on everything else I've heard from people I know. On one hand, it IS a catalytic converter, and should be legal as a replacement :thumb: but on the other hand, products like that usually have a disclaimer that says "off road use only" I guess my main concern (I know, I probably should have been more specific earlier) would be passing inspection when April rolls around next year. Does anyone know if a high flow cat would pass the emissions test? More specifically, does anyone know if Massachusetts is tough on emissions? Okay, I've rambled on long enough. Thanks again for any help I can get here.

Random Technology makes a street legal hi-flow cat, you should'nt have any problems with emmisions wih thiers.

I know it'll pass the visual inspection, I think as long as it doesnt throw a CEL you should be good to go, you've got a 97 so its ODBII (On Board Diagnostics II) they should plug it in and scan for codes and not use the sniffer at all. Though they did sniff test mine when they saw the turbo under the hood
