I just installed a pacesetter header on my laser, and it certainly seems to have more power. The only problem is the torque curve is all screwed up. Its not a smooth power flow anymore, kind of lumpy. The rest of the exhaust system back is entirely stock, but it was originally 2.25" so I figured it would work good. Has anyone else had any experience with this, or could shed any light on what's going on? Thanks

when i had my header on i didn't have any problems liek you mention. only thing I did different was I ported the runners to match a gasket and cleaned up welds on the inside of the header.

It sounds very good. Very low deep idle, and when it gets into the power it sounds racy, but still deep. I bought it from NOPI they had it for $148, cheapest i found. I cleaned the welds a little bit on the ends of mine too, i think i'll check to make sure all the bolts are tight and i don't have any leaks, but with all the stock resonators and muffler, it think it may be restricting.

Very if you ask me, try to get in your list of "to do" things an Exhaust muffler as your next step, and if in the future your thinking of more HP, then upgrading your 2.25 exhaust piping for 2.5 mandrel bent will be very good, It's kinda expensive if your on a budget though, but it'll be worth it. and it'll be good when you install more upgrades to your engine.!!! :dsm:

Well it seems to be running good now. With this setup the stock expansion joint is replaced by two flanges with bolts running through and springs on them. The springs hold it together, so i tightened the bolts and it runs better, must have been leaking out there under throttle. Its 4-2-1. The 2-1 section is behind the engine, the stock one is in front, so it changes the whole power band. Much higher rpm for power now. I actually got an offer by an exhaust shop near me to to a cat-back exhaust piping and muffler for $200. Just might have to go for it.

Hey, I don't mean to highjack this thread or anything, but i've been considering headers for my 2g for a few months, i have enough money to buy these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2408193415&category=6770
But not enough to get the friggin $500 ones from the parts catalog. are these the type you have for your 1g? These are the only 4-2-1 i've seen on ebay, cause i usually use that for my stuff, its cheap and i've not be screwed yet..haha. I was wondering if anyone thinks these headers are worth it. or if they're gonna crap out. Thanks guys, Again, I apologize if its semi-off topic, didnt wanna start another header thread. Thanks:talon:

Its a pacesetter header. The 1g headers are different from the 2g. I don't know if the header to head connection is the same, but on the 2g the exhaust bends to the driver side i think, on the 1g it bends to the passenger side. But the one in the pic looks like a 4-1. Should bring up torque

how good are those pacesetter headers cuz i went and looked at them on nopi and i want to buy some headers but i want somthing that will be good quality. thanks for the help.

I had it on my 91 and I loved it. It certainly gave more torque at low revs and mid-range power. It didn't do anything on the top-end but I don't spend much time there anyway.;)

I like my pacesetter, only problem was I blew my 4-2 gasket. went to the local speed shop picked up some header gasket material and it's been great for five months. other than that no problems......

I've been looking at GReddy 4-1 Headers, they're 500 dollars though. Tell me if you can do a comparison between them and your Pacesetters, I mean if I could save a few hundred, hey.

I blew the 4-2 gasket too, but all I could find was the muffler reapir stuff. Do you know where they got the material that fixed yours? Thanks

Hey thanks alot guys for the info i will buy the headers on my next pay day. Oh ya and by the way on a scale of 1 to 5 how would you rate the install... Thanks.

Pretty easy to install, takes a lot of time. Unless you have a new converter, expect to have to cut or chisel the original stuff apart. I had to take mine to a shop to have that part put together for $20, but the rest was no problem

I would have to rate it a 2 if you've been under the hood before. The local speed shop got the header gasket material from (MR. GASKET)
But I had to cut it to fit myself, you can get it in like 10in x 10in sheets

About the install. are like the bolts hard to take out??? and do u have to have a jack and go underneath to do it???? what were u talking about haveing a shop put them together for you???? i was thinking about getting one and i wasn't sure if i could install it.

Mr. Gasket sounds good, I'll have to see if I can find it, thanks. As for the install. The connection to the head was pretty easy, for me the nuts came loose without a problem. you will have to take off the power steering pump to get to the one on the far right. The bolts that take apart the first two sections were also pretty easy, but there is a little bolt that holds the assembly to the block. Its easier to unbolt from the bracket from the block and then unbolt that from the manifold. It sounds complicated, but its not , just hard to explain. After that there's just the bolts connecting it to the converter. I had to grind them off, but you could use a chisel or a drill too. since i destroyed them I didn't really have a way to put it back together, so I drove it to a shop (really loud) and they welded the two together. There's nothing really hard, but it does take a lot more time than it looks.

That sounds about right, I kinda had to do the same thing but I just bougth a piece of pipe and cut off the cat and then welded it back together. It is a pretty easy install, just don't break off the studs when taking the nut off, and when your putting the new one on try not to strip the head. :thumb:
