I have a miss on cylinder #2 that I've been chasing. (P0302).

I've replaced:
  1. Plugs
  2. Wires
  3. Coil
  4. Fuel Injector
  5. Fuel Filter

I have been unable to find the miss, but when swapping plugs or wires between #2 & #3 the miss stays with #2. I can't find a vacuum leak anywhere. I gave up and put it in the Mitsubishi Dealer's shop. The car is a '97 with a 420A and it is not under warranty.

I called them today and they want to replace all of this because it is non-OEM. The guy said that Mitsubishi's don't respond well to after-market parts. I'm a little pissed off about that as it seems they are not really working the problem. It seems to me that they just want to throw parts at it.

What do you guys think?

Being an ase certified technician I would recomend getting your car back. If you switched with another cylinder and the miss stayed with #2 you have something else wrong with that cylinder. I would check compression and maybe a bad injector.

Thanks for the quick response!

I've replaced the injector with ZERO change in behavior. With a stethoscope I can hear the injector clicking.

I've checked the compression and I don't recall the specific pressure, but it was with 2-3 lbs across all 4 holes.

They charge a $70 diagnostic (that you don't pay if you let them fix your car). So I'm thinking I'll let them replace my plugs and wires, etc until they hit $70 so I'll at least get SOMETHING form my money. The other option is to argue that they haven't diagnosed the problem yet and try to get out with no money spent.

PO302: Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected

Hit up a buddy and swap out the coil packs, check the wiring and connectors.

I already swapped the coil with a brand new one. I was unable to find any problems with the wiring or connectors. I disconnected, reconnected, jiggled, traced, all the wiring I could image might be related to this.

What do you think about the dealer wanting to replace all those NEW parts with OEM?

No matter what some guy at the dealer tells you, aftermarket parts are designed to work as good if not better than OEM. Of course unless you purchased critical parts from ...let's say OBX or E-Bay.

And I imagine you already looked at the plugs?

Did they find out what was wrong with your car.
And if so care to share what it was

well here is the fact you said you will let them replace parts till the reach the $70 mark well the factory wires + install is going to equal more than $70 cause most shops charge at least a 1hr min. for shop hrs. which in most dealers is like 75-80 bucks plus the cost of parts , just go get the car and pay the 70 bucks

Chedck out your transistor pack that drives the coils. I've seen them fail numerous times. However since you're car is running the stock coil setup, which is wasted spark, you would be experiencing the miss in cylinders 2 AND 3 since they're on the same coil circuit. Another idea to investigate atleast.
