I have a 96 Mitsu Eclipse NT

I have AEM cold air intake
Greddy 4-2-1 headers
High flow CAT
and Magnaflow Exhaust

I just put in a new Magnaflow CatBack Exhaust System, and im getting a weird smell out of it.

It almost smells like burning rubber or plastic, and even maybe a little hint of antifreeze. I also realized the engine bay gets a little hotter than usual. Thermostat stays regular in the middle though.

Any ideas or experience

Thanks in advance

Can you be sure there are no exhaust leaks?

The extra engine bay heat could be due to the fact that you don't have your exhaust heat shield on anymore.

Check for any coolant/oil leaks dripping on to the exhaust about that burning smell.

Is there a gasket between your header and block? That could be a cause for an exhaust leak.

Its probably just the high flow cat, but make sure all the gaskets from your header down to the muffler itself.

also its an odd place to check but if you notice the coolant line runs right over the header, and alot of people don't realize it but you can lose coolant there and have it burn off right away.

I witnessed this on the dyno with my car with he hood open.

If the exhaust is brand new there is probably some oil or something on it. Pretty much anything metal comes from whatever factory with some residue on it that will eventually burn off.

i had the same thing happen when I got a muffler welded on my Stealth, if it doesnt go away after a few days then i would start to worry about it, but you should be fine.

it is nothing to worry about bud. All exhausts do that when they are first installed. It should go away pretty quick. Some mufflers are backed with different materials that tend to smell and even smoke a little at the beginning.

enjoy the exhaust.

Nice thanks for all your input Fellas. i was starting to get a little paranoid about it.

I'll let it ride and see what happens

Thanks again:thumb:
