Well I have done a t-belt job hundreds of times on a 4g63 and can do it blindfolded in about 45 minutes nowdays. I have never done timing on a 420a and just need to make sure of something:
The dowel pins on the cams should face up(12 o clock position) just like the 4g63? Thanks in advance.

i am not sure about that. the cams can only go on one way on the 420a.(stock cams) there are timing marks on the cams. they line up. i will go out and look at my dowel pins and see what is up though. be right back....

well you can't see the pins with the washers and bolts in so you should not have to worries about that. just use the timing marks

the only way I can get the two marks to face each other is to have one dowel pin at 12 and the other at 6. otherwise they are both on the left hand side of the gears. I will post a pic if My batteries will hold up.

Ha! Beat you to it selmerguy :p . Yeah, on the 420a one dowel up and one dowel down. I believe the intake dowel is down and the exhaust is up (like you said wolf2003; 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock.
Thanks Bro. That is exactly what I was looking for.

i just messed up my hydrolic's so my car is down. you have been down for awhile right? the t belt is easy just take your time.

been down for 3 months or so...

it's actually looking like a car again though, I'm excited. I guess I should update my rebuild thread with pics etc. I've been waiting for my damn rod bolts that I had to order from some mitsubishi dealership since there isn't one here in bfe alaska hahaha. it's all good though, still got a bit more to go before I actually have to put the pan on and fill it up.

/hands back thread now/

so t-belt shouldn't be that bad then...I hope not

the other post says that the intake is at 6 o'clock and the exhaust at 12 o'clock.
i'm confused, when i had the after market cam gears put on, he didn't know how to line them up. there was a mark on each cam (just like the factory) and a mark above each cam on the plastic cam cover.

i would appreciate it if someone could put it in retard terms for me... thank you

all this says is when BOTH of the dowels are at 12 o'clock (facing up), it makes puts both of the timing marks facing the left. In order to have the proper timing (timing marks facing inward toward each other), you have to rotate the intake dowel down (6 o'clock) thus putting the timing mark facing to the right...and have the exhaust cam dowel upward (12 o'clock), once this is achieved, the timing marks will be aimed in the proper direction :thumb:

P.S. the mechanical tensioner conversion is quite fun to get in time :|

Care to elaborate? I'm pulling my head in a couple months and, while my current hydro tensioner is just fine, I like the idea of the mechanical. How does the new process vary from the old? I might just grab this guy while I'm in there. It will mean 60k before I have to get into the bay for that again. :p

don't get me wrong here...the bracket bolts right up and is awesome, while the whole idea is still nifty to me  what I had trouble with is the fact that I had the tensioner pulley loosened as much as it would go, yet still didn't have enough slack to get the belt around it...it of course being the last obstacle, as the belt was routed everywhere else already. I ended up being sneaky about it and removed it from it's stud that holds it to the bracket, and slid the belt onto the edge at the same time I was pushing it back onto the stud ;) ...anywho, that ended up working cuz for some reason after it was in place, I magically had the slack in the belt I was looking for LOLz.....tightened the tensioner pulley back up and was good to go :rocks:

sorry the pics are still on my cam, but they'll be posted up soon enough :thumb:
