I can't even think of what this might be - this seems to happen in 2nd and 3rd gears, but at any thirottle position, from about 2400-2600 rpms, something seems to be rattling. It actually sounds like somethings grinding. It literally dissapears anywhere under and over these rpms.
Any help with troubleshootig this problem would be greatly appreciated

Thanks, Teddy:dsm:

prolly the same problem as I had, as with many old cars.... your exhaust might bet getting loose and rattles as a certain pressure of air goes through them

Thanks - since the subject was brought up, is it possible to hollow out the stock cat?
Would this be beneficial, or cause problems?
If helpful, how much would it cost, or would it just be worth getting a high flow?- not really worried about inspection as i'll have to get it done at a garage anyway

yes it will increase the flow possibilities of your exhaust, but as a con it will increase the raspiness of your exhaust. Mine has been gutted for quite some time and I like it. I shoot flames out of my exhaust from time to time now too. If you decide to gut yours it is quite easy, all you do is take the cat off and beat its insides until it is completely empty.

Thanks for the info - im assuming there aren't strict laws on emmesions in sc and tx - i can tell you that i'd get #@%#@%#@%#@% here in nj - any tricks to avoid failing, or would it be best to just go to a garage and pay

Teddy

Pray, pray, PRAY it's not the spun bearing syndrome! But that's more of a ticking noise, till it completely goes.

yeah, i spun a bearing in mine. think i caught it before anything bad happened but went ahead and installed another engine to be safe. plus i can do all sorts of engine stuff to the one that is out now once i get it checked and cleared.

doesnt gutting your cat make your exhaust sound...raspy.. sorta.. and doesnt it stink? thats what i heard..

Ive had a spun bearing before as well and I can definitely say that they suck. Fortunately my car was under warranty and I got it taken care of for free, but they replaced my block.

High Flow cats are similar to stock cats just larger in diameter so you should still pass emissions with these
