I was wondering if anyone can tell me what size piping i should get for my GS. I dont want to go too big and lose HP. Any help would be great. Thanks

so u think 2.5 is good? Some say 2.5" and some say 2.25". I dont know which to go for. Any difference between the two sizes?

Umm... Correct me if I am wrong but he is asking about a "downpipe" for a non-turbo car?

all i want to know is what size is better recommended for my non turbo. 2.5 or 2.25"????? thanks

LOL....

Ok guys what is the piece called from after the header to the cat....? A #@%#@%#@%#@%ING DOWNPIPE.

Oh and here is a pic of ERT's downpipe.

And for the Turbo Guru here is our downpipe for us turbocharged 420A's.

ERT is the only company I know of that has ever made a downpipe for us, besides Star. I don't know where you though that up. HRC doesn't even send a full downpipe. They make you chop yours up and slide their half downpipe over your stocker.

no, no, no. Im not talking about with the turbo kit, Im talking about on an NA application where the owner has replaced the exhaust manifold with a header as Davidle did. I do not see why you would spend 500 dollars on a header and it does not fully replace the exhaust from the car forward.

I bought this car with a Greddy Header on it and has a 3" pipe all the way back with an Apexi Dunk Exaust. Since my car is a NON-Turbo, whenever my car reaches past 3K RPM, it sounds like $hit. It sounds like a its gonna blow or a pop can is stuck in the damn thing. So im just curious which one is better because i need to change the piping. A 2.5 or 2.25"???? thats all im asking and no ones really helping me out here.

sorry, have you thought about just adding a resonator to your exhaust piping?? It will reduce the raspiness and noise levels, without hindering performance too much. Since you still have that 3" piping it is going to be raspy even if you do change the downpipe section of the exhaust. I have 2.5" piping and with the stock pre-cat exhaust system(from exhaust manifold to the cat) and a gutted cat I still get some raspiness around 3500 rpm (well it has gotten better since I put the CAI on).

thanks for the info 1998 Eclipse RS. I probably will go for 2.5. Does it sound good??? See, i want my exaust to sound deep, with a deep tone. Not like a piece of $hit "Go Kart". so 2.5 sounds good to me.

well i guess I wasnt helpful...anyway, I have 2.5" mandrel bent piping with an OBX muffler. Before I gutted the cat it was very loud and very deep, half the time all I would have to do is rev my engine and people wouldnt want to race me. Now with the cat gutted it got a little raspy, and even louder. Once I added the CAI the raspiness basically went away, and the exhaust note is deep once again. I get thumbs up and smiles and mad compliments on how my exhaust sounds.

So when you "gut the cat" the cat basically acts as a big resonator right?, why not just buy a test pipe for $25 or weld a in a straight piece of pipe?

The shape of the cat is kinda f*cked.

dont you get a lot of exhaust turbulence in there? (reduced backpressure)

I dont have any emission laws where my car is registered either. And I really dont have too much backpressure, in fact when the car is near redline and I shift I can hear air getting sucked into the exhaust. Its kinda cool, but backpressure is never needed anyway

Just changing the downpipe will not quiet it down much. If you do end up getting a 2.5" cat back for it though I would be in the market for a 3" at the right price.

You can go with upto 2.75", even though I don't suggest more then 2.5", If you go more then 2.75", for every .25" you will loose about 2% HP (as stated by MachV's faq, I have never tested it). But on my NT project, I am using 2.25" to increase the velocity of the exhuast gases leaving the engine.
