hey all, I'm new to this and I wanna get some advice on some upgrades for my 98 spyder gs. I got a decent deal on it but I'm pissed that its an auto...I wanna go back to stick.....and I'm not too happy with the power in the Spyder's engine. It's not slow but its def. not fast like I want it to be. I am looking at buying cold air intake and then exhaust. After that I don't know. What kind of cold air intake should I get and how much will it cost me? Thanks
 
probably a stupid question but it doesnt specify spyder or not....will it still fit? and also I saw a couple posts about "free mods" well are there any for my car? thanks
 
breaking news...little to NOTHING is made specifically for the spyder gs. a couple things from the gst will fit, but nothing (engine wise) is the same as a hardtop gs/rs. totally different engines.

you can do the suspension game lowering springs($100-$200), struts($300-$400), camber kits(about $120 for front, rear can be homemade), front strut bar & lower tie bars ($40 a piece) any suspension mod made for an eclipse (excluding the gsx) will fit.

as far as engine, there's not much tho. the intake you'll need you can find on e-bay. do a search for "turbo intake" . it's actually made for the turbo model, but fits our cars perfectly. it's just a MAS adapter and cone filter ($40) that replaces the stock air box. an intake that includes the "piping" will NOT work.

any eclipse exhaust will fit, for the cheap version..go for any straight-thru universal muffler (e-bay again), get it welded on and custom 2.5" piping from the header back at your local exhaust shop. including the muffler should run you around $200. exhaust shop won't put this on, but i'd recommend you pick up a 2.5" test pipe ($35) to replace your cat. converter as well.

magnecore makes spark plug wires specifically for our cars (about $80). pick some of those up along with a set of platinum or iridium plugs ($25-$45).

any under-drive CRANK pulley for the turbo eclipse will fit our cars as well. i've done a little research on these and it seems that brand really doesn't usually matter too much...so look for the cheap ones (ebay again, about $70).

this is about all we can do as far as bolt-ons. you can always do some internal engine work...port and polish the head, bore the throttle body, port the intake manifold, etc. (prices will depend on the shop you get this done at)

easy way to make your car much faster, and i plan on doing, NITROUS. some people believe in it...some don't. i'm planning on getting a ZEX kit (55 shot) eventually tho. ZEX makes a very simple, safe, and reliable kit (about $400)......just put the pedal down and it sprays automatically (when armed).

like any car, you can also lighten it up a little..lighter rims, carbon fiber or fiberglass hood, remove spare tire, racing seats, etc etc.

your car's not going to be a rocket, granted, but with these mods (or atleast most of them) you should EASILY be in the mid 15's. goodluck and feel free to pm me if you need any advice/opinions.:dsm:
 
wow, that is funny, the turbo cars use the 4G63 motor, the 2g NT's use the 420a. And that is all rs,gs,and the spyder, the only diverence is engine internals. The rs an gs have different pistons, rods, and crank, making it a 2.0l engine. While the spyder has different pistons, rods, and crank, making it 2.4l. But they are both Chrysler 420a motors.

Sorry, I was confused for a second, the 420a 2.4l was in the avenger and the galant, the 4g64 is in the spyder, sorry, I am not that good with the 2g NT's, just the 1G's

**buzzer** WRONG! before giving a reply, atleast LOOK into the engine bay of a spyder dude. :rolleyes: i think i know... i own one.


it is a COMPLETLEY different engine. the spyder gs has a 4g64, NOT 420a. the spyder shares the same engine with the galant & 2000+ rs & gs.

it's actually fairly simple (and cheap, under $2k) to turbo the 4g64 using parts from the 4g63 (gst). also, our engines turboed will smoke a stock gst. only reason i haven't done it is reliability concerns...i've seen people who have done it with little to no problems....but it's not something that important to me to take the chance.

Heh no #@%#@%#@%#@% a turbo'd 2.4L with higher compression will smoke a factory 2.0 with lower compression?? Geez I don't understand.
