Is it clutch or tranny issues?

Ok so ive been tackling random issues with the car since saturday when i first bought it. I'm trying to narrow down a problem i'm having with shifting. There are a few things it's doing and i'll outline them below.

1. Clutch pedal travels almost half way before engaging the gear.

2. When shifting into 1st I need to shift into 2nd before i reach first, otherwise 1st kicks out with a grinding sound and then removes itself from first putting it back in neutral, then i need to restart the whole circuit to get it to go again.

3. I cannot find reverse for the life of me. I know its far right and down, so its not my inability to find it, but whenever i release the clutch and give it some gas it boggs down like its starting in 5th and then dies. Tried shifting into 5th then reverse, 4th then reverse and still the same thing.

4. While driving in 5th gear I notice that when I touch the gas, i can watch the gear shifter move about an inch or so. It also likes to kick it out of 5th into neutral as well.

At this point im not even sure what the issue is, weather its the trans or just needs a new clutch. You guys are pretty good with symptoms, any ideas on this one?

Sounds like both to me, the cluth pedal not engaging till halfway up isn't necessarily a problem if it still does its job ok, but it definitely sounds like you need to rebuilt or replace the transmission, it shouldn't be dropping out of gears, and the shifter should not have that much play while in gear.

As for reverse, some cars have a reverse lockout, where you have to press down
on the shifter, or lift up on a ring, to shift into reverse, its either that, or more transmission issues.

The clutch should engage about half way. That's where its supposed to be. You should also have some free play at the top also. As far as the issues your having it sounds like your going to be in for replacing the transmission soon. dont feel too bad tho, i got a second gear grind a few days ago and drained my fluid and it was straight silver LOL.

Im not worrying about replacing the trans, i'd rather do that and change the clutch so I know things are good down there. I have no idea what the previous owner did to this poor car, but im starting to find out more and more that I should have punched him in the face when I bought it. I can get a trans used for like $500 so im not worried about replacing it. Better safe then sorry. Thanks guys

I'm going to agree with the above on replacing the trans soon. But if I were you I would go ahead and change the clutch as well if you were putting in a new trans. I don't think anyone wants to have to go through that crap twice.
