Recently I picked up a 2g awd with a spun rod bearing, I have a fresh 7 bolt shortblock I'd like to put in it, just wondering what exactly I'd need to do for it? I'm going to put the 2g head on the shortblock but I'm not exactly sure what to do with the crank sensor. I read a few things about using a 1g cas, which I have, but not really sure how all that works. Is there anything else I'd need to modify for the 1g 7 bolt to work?

thanks

It's basically the same procedure as putting a 6-bolt in a 2G if you were to use a 1G CAS. The good thing about using a 7-bolt rather than a 6-bolt is that the 2G crank sensor should transfer to the 1G 7-bolt front case. If you are using the 2G head (which should be a direct swap, and thus keep the 2G cam sensor) and are able to retain the 2G crank sensor, the swap should be relatively easy and just a matter of modifying the engine mount. Assuming you can do that, the only other thing to worry about is the coolant feed for the turbo if you plan to run coolant to your turbo.

There's been a few posts on this before:

I know that not all 1g 7 bolt front covers have the holes. I've had a few that did, and a few that did not. I know that they sell them with the same part number, so i assuming that it might of been an early year specified thing or something like that. I would just pull the outer timing cover and look at the front cover. IT should have 2 6mm bolt holes (10mm head) on the right side of the crank pulley. If they are there than you are good, if not than you can just buy a front cover, or inspect the one from the 2g engine for wear, and install it on that engine. Other than that you as stated it will be pretty straight foreward. Especially that you are using the 2g head on it. You will have to do the modifications to the driver motor mount bracket as if you were doing a 6 bolt swap. It is real easy though and just involves cutting an ear off of it. The bellhousing will have one less hole in the 1g bolt also. It is not a problem though. Everything will bolt to the engine properly though, just as it did from the old engine. You will use the timing cover, intake, ps bracket, oil filter housing, exhaust manifold, turbo, water pipe, water neck, throttle body, coil, transistor and everything else that came off the car. Just swapping out the short block. You will have a slight difference with the water turbo water line on the 1g 7 bolt, as it is connected to a pipe that comes out the front of the block on the 2g 7 bolt, and out of the water neck on the 1g 7 bolt.

Great, thanks guys, I'll check my new front case tomorrow and see if it has the provisions for the crank sensor and yes I'm using the 7 bolt head and my new turbo isn't water cooled so no need to worry about that.
