ok so it was grinding in 2nd gear for a while till it grinded a hole thru the front case and lost all my tranny fluid. when i took the front case off there was a gold gear type thing, lots of metal shavings and also a washer or something like that inside that looks as if it all came from the same place. what im wondering is can i get a new front case from a junk yard and put it on my tranny and fill it back up with tranny fluid and drive it without 2nd gear and just go from 1st to 3rd gear temporarly till i get it fixed?

well that woulld ideally be the way to go but unfortunately i cant really afford it right now. thats why i was wondering if i could do it the way i was thinking ### i need my car to get back and forth from work you know? do you think what i was saying would work? at least temporarely...??

If it broke off that bad then odds are it damaged more than just the front case. You could try the method you are wanting too but there is a good chance there is more internal damage. Start saving the pennies for a new transmission. Pick up a used one cheap from the junkyard since you are going to get a front case anyways.

Here is one for $450

if i were to try my method, it wouldnt damage anything else would it? i mean as of right now i already need to replace my tranny so if anything were to get damaged it would only damage the tranny more than it already is right? or is there any way that it would damage my motor in any way?

The gold thing is a brass syncro. If you took the end cover off and found it, its the 5th gear syncro. The others are likely bad also causing it to grind in 2nd at minimum.

You can get just a section of the case from vendors like team rip(I did), but from what is sounds like you have more internal problems. It could potentially live for a while. There not any reason not to try unless you plan on trading the trans in as a core.

Post a picture of the end of the trans and the parts. We could have a better idea of the issue.

Yep, that is the 5th gear syncro and the wave spring. The syncro bouncing around in the case probably got caught in intermediate gear and blew the hole where it is. Unless the small 5th gear is moving around so much it did. If so it will be chewing up the next part of the case.

You have another problem also. The intermediate gear assembly is rubbing against the end case. You can see the circular gouging. If you can move that gear or shaft around the bearings need replacing at minimum. There are probably several things wrong further in the transmission.

The problems readily visable won't help you with 1-2nd shift.

If it were mine and I needed it for transportation I would first make sure the gears are not very loose and about to lock up. Put the end case back on and stay out of 5th. Drive like you wear polyester leisure suits.

Check the nuts also to make sure they aren't loose. I thought mine being loose was a fluke but apparently it is not.

so do you think it would be cheaper to just buy a used or rebuilt tranny or to have mine rebuilt?
