rear cf lip installed

I didn't like this stick-on "rear lip" idea from the beginning, but I was hoping for the best because so many invested into it. I don't like stickers on a car, ruins the clean lines. IMO, you're better off doing what others do to the front bumper cover, just paint it for the same look you'll get from this expensive "sticker."

It looks exactly like what it is... a cheap CF overlay.

A cheesy simulated carbon fiber stick-on vinyl film would look better (but please don't do that either).

How does it get installed? Is it a sticky backing?
negative, there is nothing. the manufacturer (or the guy working out of his garage) suggested push tabs and 3m tape. Im not sacrificing my $550 2gb bumper with fresh paint on it for a cf piece that looks like its worth $15. I just used ALL 3m tape so after i installed the damn thing i could quickly remove it and use goo gone to get rid of the evidence. if you want pictures of the install ive got those too... just let me know.

agreed. theres a cf place down here on the border that makes good cf and sells it on ebay for a good price. me and the dsm buddies who bought this POS lip on the group buy are thinking about taking it down there and asking them to make a REAL cf lip.

^^ I'm with you on this one. Looks like you shoulda just save some $$ and went to pepboys and gotten that fake carbon fiber shit and just slapped a huge piece across the rear. Good thing is you can take it off and resell it to someone on here and make back your $$.

Sorry it didnt come out to your expectations dude. It sucks to be let down like that after such a long waiting period

We pop the lips off of a mold, hold them up to a 2gb rear bumper and then go along with the process. As has been said in every other post e-mail us and we will more then make it right by you. Yours was not sanded properly... We need to re do that lip bottom line. I checked the books and you recieved the third lip We produced... The first 5 are going to look the worst out of the bunch. That was our first run, first time seeing problems and first time fitting the product. We are also offering to the first 5 people if they want there corners rounded we can do that at no charge and pay shipping back to you.

The photo above was done on a computer, there were other pics of a prototype lip we made as well.

We have a shop not a house garage, we make nice products at great prices, this was our first run and there will be flaws. Customers can email us [email protected]

I'm at least glad you guys at 386 are owning up to this. It is absolutely true that the first batch will always be exposed to a certain level of risk. I most definitely think that the top cut needs to be straightened out to match the bumper (it looks VERY crooked) and the bottom needs to come out more to completely cover the bottom of the bumper. I also think the rolled edges will make this bumper up the par on where it needs to be. Still lots of potential here.

Your right there are a lot of things left open with the production run of this lip. THIS IS NOT A $400 LIP! Its a basic rear lip designed to add a little flare to a somewhat bland bumper. Its not an exhaust shield, however it does cover that area and perform as one. The mistake made on this lip is unacceptable however its not uncommon with the FIRST run. We stand behind our products and will fix any mistake to the best of our abilities. people saying vinyl carbon fiber would look better, You should probably get your eyes checked. From the pics above the only issue i see is the top not being even. If you do not like how you can see the red on the side of the exhaust, Take a piece of masking tape and cover that area. Once completed take black spray paint and paint the masking tape black, Problem solved. The curve on the exhaust area is very sharp and due to the length of our fabric if we were to stretch it all the way to the inside of the bumper you would have creased lines running through the lip.

Im not going to post on this thread any longer, A lot of people are jumping on the bandwagon and trashing a company that is making products the dsm crowd requests at a price they can afford. Any questions can be asked via email or PM (we do not log onto this website every day)

it definitly gets peoples attention, too bad its the wrong kind. imo it adds an eye sore to a somewhat good looking 13yr old DSM for a low cost of $180.

the uneven cut across the top might be unacceptable to your standards but what about all the other imperfections in the piece? the bumps, waves, the fact that i can hold it up to light and see right through it, etc?

people saying vinyl carbon fiber would look better, You should probably get your eyes checked.
i think the "people" that need to get their eyes checked should be the "people" that made this lip and thought this would be acceptable to put on a DSM. id pay twice as much for something that would actually ENHANCE the look of my car and be a rare piece...

problem solved until you want to take off the cf lip because of the reasons listed above and then you've got a ruined bumper...

affordable shouldn't compromise quality... id rather spend $250 on something that will make my car look good than $180 on something that will make it look like ass. :aha:

my opinions stated above are MY OPINIONS, please take from them what you will...

this is interesting how 386 customs is still doing business after putting out poor quality parts like that. maybe this cf rear lip will be the last nail in the coffin since its def. in the dsmtuners public eye at how bad of a job they did...
i took a trip to little ceasars to get some pizza and i was embarrased to drive my car, thats the first time since ive owned it ive felt like that. that big cf sticker thats cut cricked is def. coming off.

:dsm:

im sorry to hear this rear lip did not turn out looking good on your car, especially since i was one of the people saying to put it on in your CF Wing thread. In the first photoshopped picture it looks very clean on the silver eclipse, but on your car it just looks like a big sticker sitting on the back. Other than that the car still looks great:thumb:

I don't think it looks good, mainly because it has no depth, its sloppily cut, and it seems wavy from looking at the reflection.

If it looked anything like the top car it would be awesome, but this seems like a cheap alternative =-P

BTW, I love your eclipse=]

I don't think anybody's trashing anybody in this one. we all know that you've made quality products in the past. There are many of us who love your spark plug covers and fog light covers and gas tank caps. But cmon, you're a company thats been in the business for a while now, ya gotta be able to take the good with SOME bad. I'm glad you guys are owning up to the mistake. I'm sure everything will get straightened out.

well i tried doing this thing justice today before i take it off for good and ship it back to 386 customs for its makeover...

Damn your car is sexy. I'm glad that they are standing behind their product.

ive been through your gallery too man, my other DSM (and first) is that color and i love it... your car is clean and you've got some pretty good shots of it.

Honestly I would buy one if it was identical to the 1st picture of what it was spose to look like. It's not terrible and I give them credit for trying with the 1st batch. I'm positive they will get it right the next time around :thumb: they are still good guys over at 386 customs and work hard IMO

Nice concept, bad exectution. But if they make it right, then its all good. I commend their company for making new products for the DSM community.

The mold has been modified and we will keep modifying it until we reach the point of correction. I thank everyone for understanding and for the input, without it we would have shipped out 27 square shaped lips and would not have had a clue that there was an issue. The first five were put out just for that reason, we are also going to add another layer of gelcoat to our process to remove the occasional wave.

Gofer, your car is sexy... even with a square miss shaped lip :ohdamn:

I applaud 386-Customs for owning up to this issue. I can understand having a bad first run of a product. I, however, can not understand letting such a product past QC.
Much less 5 times.

It def looks nice from a distance and the car is flat out gorgeous, might have some kind of prejudice though due to my dsm ;). Its great that 386 is fixing it, brian always seems to do right by people. Let us know how this "new" one is.

The other issue of it being thin, have you ever considered fiber-glassing the back for some more structure?
