they are not chewed up. they are made like this to help them engaging in each others. reverse gears teeths are not in an angle shape because this purpose is for limiting the noise when rolling. This is why reverse gears are always noisy.

:ohdamn: Alright cool i didnt know that thanks I took it apart lastnight before i took it to the tranz shop. Pulled it because it keep popping out of 4th gear. thanks man :thumb:

I posted this up on DSMlink and someone on there told me The "Big Gear" is actually the 1st/2nd Sleeve from the 1st/2nd Hub & Sleeve. That one can not be purchased separately and should be about $150 (IIRC), the small Gear is the Reverse Idler and should be about $35/40.

Anyone know if this is true?

Ok, first off, the arrows you have drawn in your pictures are pointing to the 1/2 Hub and Slider, and the INPUT SHAFT (the reverse gear is cast into the Input shaft).

Your 3rd and 4th GEARS are on the INPUT SHAFT as floating gears. The INTERMEDIATE SHAFT has the 3rd and 4th drive gears cast into the the intermediate shaft.

I have given you a list of replacement parts below, they are STOCK replacement parts for the 1995-1999 AWD Transmission. The Mitsubishi part number is followed by the part description.

As well, I have attached photographs with details explaining each gear on the shaft. I hope that it is self explanatory. As well, I would suggest that you read a technical service manual to properly disassemble your transmission so that you know what you are doing when you put it back together properly. I am leaving that search in YOUR hands, as the information I am giving you is more than plenty to get the job done.

Though this list may seem long, it doesn't cover all the parts considered in a rebuild whatsoever. Be sure to inspect your center differential case for damage to its cast in gears, and to fully inspect the condition of the center differential guts -- the spider gear shims usually get burned out, along with the center diff cover pinion Gear shim. If the pinion gear shim is micro-welded to the cover or to the pinion gear, you will NEED a new center differential pinion gear set, along with a new center differential cover. I would recommend that you contact Jon @ TRE, or John @ Sheptrans, or Jack @ Jackstransmissions for these parts, as they are all capable of giving you the proper product along with a NEW center differential cover machined for the Torrington Bearing modification. You will still NEED to reshim your center differential properly, replacing new lower and upper pinion shim oiling washers, and center diff spider gears shims. The center diff spider gear shims are only one size, while the lower and upper pinion shim oiling washers come in several sizes, requiring you to either purchase alot of unwanted extra parts, or making you send out your center diff to a qualified transmission rebuilder above to properly reshim the center diff the first time, saving you money in the long run.

Good luck with your project, and TAKE YOUR TIME!!!!! Inspect EVERYTHING, and be sure to clean out ALL the oiling holes and oil guides on the the parts, INCLUDING the Input and Intermediate Shafts!

As well, there is a specific orientation that each Hub and Slider MUST go on to properly work. Either take photographs as you are taking it apart, or follow the Factory Service Manual. If you don't have a FSM, I would suggest detailed photographs then to keep your orientation proper, as it DOES MATTER.

Good luck,

awesome post^ thanks for the pics and parts#s:rocks:

Just remember, these parts listed are for 1995-1999 AWD transmissions ONLY. Some parts are interchangable with a 1991-1999 transmission, others are not.

Great post Twicks69! very nice of you to put all that time it to help out!

I think it took around an hour or so to take the photos, photoshop them, and put together the part numbers and descriptions for the parts listed.

Not too bad....I probably saved him several hours, just because I have experience with DSM AWD transmission rebuilding.

The 2 gears in the picks are reverse. Why could no one just tell OP that? Reverse is almost always chewed looking from just jamming it in.

im at school right now so i dont have links but tre sells after market shift rails and forks for a fair price nice upgrade while you are there. you could also check out jackstransmissions for other parts as well

Well, he did not specify race parts. If you want the upgraded 3/4 shift rail and HD 3/4 shift fork, you will need to purchase a completely different 3rd and 4th gearset and hub/slider assembly. I have the part numbers, or you can just search for the parts on TRE's website (GENUINE MITSUBISHI TRANSMISSION PARTS)

As well, the reverse engagement teeth on the input shaft can be cleaned up with a dremel and sand paper rolls, and the 1/2 hub and slider, keys and springs should be replaced on any rebuild if there is any wear to the slider or hub.

Good luck with your project.

Yeah great post did help out alot. It ended up being just the bearings. 3rd and 4th were fine. But I had already ordered the hole 3rd and 4th gear set up from shep like a dumm dumm :ohdamn: so I just went ahead and replaced everything. Thanks again for the help :D
