Ok guys ive done my research and im still uninformed. I have the connection on a non turbo 4g63 with about 35k on it. my 7 bolt blew apart this week so im looking into my options. will the non turbo pistons take 20psi from a evoIII 16g and last. i know all about the motor not having oil squirters and everything. i also know that the evo III had 9.0-1 compression and so does the non turbo block. will these pistons fail on me or will i be ok, or should i just try to put a set of 2g pistons in it. my build plans are as follows. 6 bolt block 2g head 1g cams evo III intake exhaust and turbo, and probably arp fasteners ?

Not sure if I should post this or not but I've tuned a certain someone's car here in pa. It's a 92 talon dl, non turbo from the factory. Mods are simple...

2g exhaust manifold
14b
tubular o2 housing
3" open DP
supra fuel pump (rewired)
stock SMIC
stock 1g BOV
91 turbo T/B
Dejon MAFT UICP
MAFT (blow through obviously)
93 (e931) eprom turbo ecu
560cc (EVO) injectors
BONE STOCK N/T ENGINE
ACT 2100 clutch for the N/T
Ebay 2g intake pipe with 3" K&N filter

Now since I don't have the car any longer (or logs or the tune) I'm not saying this is fact, but I know what I did and what the car did, so here goes...

The car ran great first off. Guessing maybe 230whp? The car would blow the tires off 1st and 2nd. Churping 3rd gear was a simple task. GtechPRO (the one that summit racing sells) said the car ran 13.5 to 13.2 range. That was at only 11 psi on 93 oct. Now when he picked up the car it was seeing 11.6:1 afr's (aem uego wideband) and the boost was at 14. Not sure how the car is running lately, he left for the marines in June. Haven't talked to him since then. The car was fun on the highway though :thumb: Hope this maybe helped a little.

Mine really likes E85....if I get time i'm cut a n/t and a turbo piston to show the cross section..

Do you have any pics of the pistons side by side. To show the differances in where the ring lands sit. I couldn't find any of my non turbo parts for a comparison

im kinda feeling that using non turbo pistons are probably not the best thing for me since my plans are changing and now i plan on runnning a low boost 56 trim instead of a high boost 16g i think im just gonna have to find a motor i like or build one but im still very intrested in the differences of the pistons

Just some first hand experience, I am currently running a 14b on 18psi on a N/T block...BUT I have turbo pistons in it. They bolt up the same, fit right on the crank, and the N/T 4g63 is just as strong as the turbo 4g63...only difference is the oil squirters. If you have a good deal on the block, just pick that up and swap in some other 4g63t pistons...Actually...if I was allowed to post in the classifieds yet, I'd have a set in their for the 1g turbo pistons with like 100k on them...oh well...in due time...good luck tho man, and keep us informed!

Here you go. I took some pictures of the differences.

First up... I took a picture with the tops aligned even. It seems the NT piston's ring land is further up and closer to where combustion takes place.

Next I aligned the ring lands to see if they were the same in thickness. Indeed they are:

Since they are higher compression I wanted to see the difference in the dish they both have:

Another note: The turbo pistons have a coating on the top above the first compression ring. The NT pistons do NOT have this coating. I'm not sure but I think it's a ceramic coating the turbo pistons have.

Hmmm. So I wonder how much more abuse the N/T piston will take with a ceramic coating. Thanks for posting that. I ahve been looking all over the place for my N/T pistons and cant find them. What is that number on top of the N/T piston?

Thank you, I've been digging through boxes of my dsm parts to find my old pistons to make that exact same point. Bottom line the nt's fire control ring is closer to the action than the turbo piston's. I've been saying this for years, it's why I have turbo pistons in an nt block in my car right now, and it's why countless other have broken ringlands on their nt pistons when pushing them too hard.

I'm glad to see someone finally came on here and proved the truth as I was having a hard time coming up with the resources to do it myself.

I knew that there was a differance. But in my search I have never found any side by side pics. I don't know without cutting them up a measuring but it does look like there is more material above the top ring land, even with the deeper dish. More material equal stronger piston.

I have a 6bolt nt motor with about 2500 miles on it since the rebuild. Would I have to change anything internal to turbo it? (its also been bored about .03 over)
