while waiting for my motor to arrive, I cut the outer wall of the timing belt cover and replaced it with a plastic acrylic wall and this is the result...

I have not done that or seen anything like it but it looks really nice, not to mention it doesn't even look home made. Nice work :thumb:

That is pretty cool looking. I have heard of people talk about it, however, you are the first that I have seen to actually do it.
If a vendor came out with a nice clear timing belt cover, I would get one.

That's cool. Hope you don't mind me using your idea :)

naw, go ahead...Its just that i didn't like the original cover b/c it was going to cover up my cam gears. I cut the wall out but then I was worried that something might fall into the timing belt, so I made a quick trip to Home Depot and bought a $2.29 sheet of plastic acrylic, bonded it to the cover, sanded it until I got tired and painted it.

It's not perfect but unless you look at it up close, it looks clean.

That is AWESOME! A lot of people have been talking about this. Getting something made like that, etc, etc etc. I believe this is the first time I actually see someone step it up and do it.

My question, how are you keep the plexi-glass in place. Is it secure so no mishaps would happen?

You should make a little write up. Only way to top that would be to have an entire clear upper timing cover. But what you done is good enough for me. I think all clear will look a little cheesey, like those cell phone cases from back in the late 90s early 00s. :)

EDIT, geez while I was typing you replied on how you secured it.

You have the lower cover on now, right? :p

Its getting re-painted flat black. The motor is still not bolted to the mounts because *cough*SBR*cough* installed a 2g mount on my motor. but yeah the lower cover is going on there also.

where is the neon? jk

Seriously maybe a strobe that's in speed with the motor?
Jegs has this new product. It's basically a timing light you bolt onto your car for permanant hook up (no more gun). Have that sucker (maybe two), hooked up and have your own little light show?
Paint little cartoons on each spindle of the wheel and every time it flashes, you get a show. Better yet girls posing....

my brain is fried for today...

Looks good.

HUH??? I have no clue what you are talking about...

Not sure if I lost with the Neon and Strobe thing?
(Just poking fun at the car show stuff with all the flashing lights etc..How else you gonna show that thing off when it's dark out?)
Or the timing light thing?
Which is a real product and is pretty slick, albeit not directly for our cars.

Either way, the real message was just to let ya know it looked good....

They have all plexy glass T-Belt covers for EVOs, wonder if they would work on our DSMs...Looks good bro, I think I will do this too, but Im an anal person when it comes to my car, so I will make sure the sanding, and bondoing is perfect:p j/p Oh and I kind of get what 95 talon_in_ma is talking about, something like the little lights that people put on the valve stems on tires, but do it on the cam gears or something.

Dustin

Has anyone maybe repainted the covers that they have put lexan on to make it look more professional? I mean just a black that goes over the silicon part by maybe a centimeter or whatever so the silicon and edges aren't as visable. someone should etch a logo or something onto theirs too.

so through all my years of dsm ownership i have always wondered if anyone makes a clear upper timing belt cover? ya know, think supra/evo. I mean its different and what better way is there to show off expensive cam gears! I swear i saw a thread years ago about this same topic, but my search had no luck recovering it. Anyway, if there is no current manufacturer of this product, (which i highly doubt since i search dsm vendors and part supplier sites like it's my job) what process would i need to have this part manufactured? Would i simply take my stock upper timing belt cover to a machine shop and have them make a clear plastic injection mold of the part or what? i realize this could be rather expensive for a just a single piece, but i guess i'm willing to spend some $$ on a one-off part that would be original (kinda, i guess for dsms...i think? WTF  )

Any help or even ballpark estimates would kick ass! :rocks:

Yeah, Boneheadperformance.com sells a clear t-belt cover for the Evos. It's made of polycarbonate (an extremely durable thermoplastic).

I spoke with them, and apparently the company who makes the Evo cover is planning on making one for the DSMs as well. Bonehead has a "waiting" list for the product if you call, but I didn't get a timeline for "if & when" they might be ready.

EDIT: I spoke with Chuck @ Boneheadperformance and he stated that the company "should" have them available at the end of August, however he said don't hold him to that, since these things were supposed to be on the market last November.

Obviously if enough interest is there, then that would probably push the vendor to work a little harder to finalize and deliver the product.

My guess is that they will cost similar to the Evo covers (i.e. ~ $90-$100)

The zaklee one is nice! Wish I hadn't run out of money on this motor rebuild so quickly. I ended up making mine out of Home depot lexan and used a rotary tool and silicone. This one is pretty much temporary until I can get the real one from zaklee. Oh, and the color on the cam gears looks orange but is actually red.
