Very true. Id say save up and find an AWD, or at least FWD Turbo. BTW: You say $500 ONLY, but did you check for a reserve price???

basically like the prev post. wait on it. yeah you will be able to make more power once you start modding but you will most likely end up hitting a wall that you won't be able to get around. to get the most out of a dsm just look for a turbo model and you will have quite a few options with it.
