Want help getting your car tuned on ECMlink for free? Want to learn to tune? Well, if you've got some free time, and are willing to put forth the effort, you can achieve all of the above.

Let me reiterate; you can achieve all of the above if you are wiling to put forth the effort. We are here to help -and we will- so long as you take the time to help us help you.

If you do not take the time to complete the basic steps below, others are not likely to take the time to help you. It's as simple as that.

Step 1: Fill out a DSM profile
If you have not already filled out a DSM profile for your car, you need to do so. We need to know what we are tuning, and your DSM profile is the means by which we can figure that out. For details on how to do this, click the link below:

Step 2: Fill out the ECMlink template
If you want good tuning advice, you need to fill out the template. The template/questionnaire will pop up automatically when you post a new thread in this sub-forum, or can be grabbed from the second link below. We use the information in the template to help evaluate your tune. This format allows those willing to help you to easily verify your car is in good working order before time and effort is invested assisting you with tuning advice. You can't tune a car that's not mechanically sound. Read the details in the first link, and if you need an example on how to fill out the template, use the second link provided. Also, ensure your TPS is properly adjusted (third link):

1) Why do I need to fill out a template?

2) How do I fill out the template?

3) Did you do step 6 in the template? No, seriously, did you do it? Why do I need to adjust my TPS?

Step 3: Ensure you are getting feedback from the appropriate sensors
Remote tuning (e.g., us helping you tune your car over the internet) presents a unique set of challenges. Because we aren't there with you, we have to depend on information you give us, and also on information your ECU is giving us from your logs. For performance tunes especially, we typically need feedback from sensors beyond what comes on your factory DSM. The following sensors should be installed, functioning, and providing feedback to your ECU (and viewable in your logs). If you're missing one or more of these, we will be limited in the amount of quality feedback we're able to give.

1) Needed for nearly every tune:
-Wideband O2 sensor (WBO2)

2) Needed for Speed Density tunes:
-Intake air temperature sensor (IAT)
-Manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP)

Step 4: Configure ECMlink
Before you even go capture a log, make sure you are capturing the correct values. For a list of what values to capture, see here:

Step 5: Capture a log
Ok, finally, on to the meat and potatoes. At this point, your car should be straight mechanically, and ECMlink should be ready to capture all the data you need to get some worthwhile feedback on your tune. So, find a nice, flat, straight, completely empty stretch of road. Drop the car in 3rd gear, click the "start capture" button and do a pull from around 2,500 RPM to whatever the redline is set at for your car (within the confines of the law, of course). At the end of the pull, click "stop capture". Once you have the pull, upload it here and we'll do our best to get your car running optimally. If you need advice on a cruise or idle tune, post the appropriate log. For cruise/idle logs, ensure the log is captured after the car is up to operating temperature, and ideally, in closed loop.

If you actually read this entire post, you're probably thinking that this is a hell of a lot of reading, work, and information. All I can say is that if you're serious about getting help with your tune, and more importantly learning how to tune, this isn't even scratching the surface. However, if you're willing to put for the the effort to learn, there are plenty of people here willing to teach. Just know, the help you get will be directly proportional to the effort you put forth.
