well, I'm not sure if all of these are related, or are all seperate problems, but here's the scoup.

I have this electrical arching sound coming it seems from my linjectors, but I cant quite tell, and if it is it seems to be comming from all of them, not just one. but its hard to pinpoing. I thought it might be my wires, so I replaced them and the plugs... still there.

Low boost. I don't have a MBC or anything so I'm going for the stock 11 psi. but I only hit about 8 and then sometimes it slowly climes to 11 but not always (sometimes I run out of rpms), but I get 8 almost instantly.

the car iddles like crap. It's not idle surge, I fixed that, but it just seems to idle really rough at 800 rpm. its not missing I don't think but I cant quite tell, I pulled out each spark plug wire in time, and they all make a difference so its running on all four cylinders. So if I leave it on for about five minutes (after it warms up) then it craps out and dies. Also, when I'm driving and I push the clutch in, it dies, if its in for any period of time, though this does not happen bewteen shifts, only when I'm stopped at a light.

well, I'm not sure if all of these are related, but if any one has any ideas, it would be much appriciated.
Thanks!

Hey i know what your saying. ive been have almost the exact same problems and have been trying to fix them for weeks. Good luck and ill be keeping my eye on this thread.

check your 2 ignition coils --at the back end of the spark plug wires & close enuf to the injectors to confuse you soundwise. The injecters should only make a clicking sound. If one of your coils is shorting out that would explain the rough idling. You can use a piece of rubber hose as a 1-eared stethoscope to pinpoint the sound. A coil is just a very long wire wound up on a spool--check it by measuring the resistance of the wire with an ohmmeter.

I would have assumed right away that that arching sound your hiring are the lifters. I dont know if the 1gs have the problem that us 2g guys have.
mitch

its not the lifters, cause I have lifter noise, its not rythmical at all it sounds like the sparkplugs are arching out at a crazy rate, I'll check the ingnition coills, any other ideas?

just double check all connections anywhere in the engine bay, and check all grounds. as for your boost, take the restrictor out off your boost solenoid. its on one of the 2 nipples. that should up your boost a few psi. i did it to mine and it went straight to 10.

thanks for the help guys, I have a spare working coil so i'll swap that in this afternoon, and see how it goes.

I can't wait to get this baby fixed.

I just rebuild the engine on the damn thing.
then I have to fix my other tsi...locked motor.

its got alot of horsepower, only the horses are dead.

well, got myself a voltmeter and went to check the ignition coils.

so I start up the car, and wouldn't ya know it, no arching sound.
so then I let it warm up.
and still no arching sound. great!
and then it hits me. the iddle is surging. again. I fixed it I thought, this weekend when I cleaned up my tb. but now its back. goddammit...I hate my car.

so I'm out of ideas, I checked everything that you were suppose to when I fixed the iddle surge the first go round. so I unplugged the idle control sensor, and it started slowly increasing in RPMs, which didn't happen before, and its also running rich. if you guys have experienced anything like this please let me know. and if you fixed it please also let me know. this thing has been put back together for 3 weeks and I still can't take it out yet.

If I met a DSM engineer I would bi*** slap him.

Ditto on the B.slap, these cars take aggravation to unforeseen levels.
I normally assume when someone is asking about malfunction that prior to the problem in question, the car was running OK. You said you've had the car together for 3 weeks now & still doesn't run right--my question is, what all did you do to the car & what all was happenning before you took it all apart.
Yeah, I know symptoms change & appear to be randomly intermittent, it can drive you nuts & paranoid to the point where you are afraid to play tunes for fear of not hearing the early signs & symptoms of impending mitsu destruction.
You can trust your ears, & if you heard arcing sounds near the injecters & have erratic idle then you may have shorted windings in your idle speed control motor.
On the other hand, if you took a bunch of stuff off the car & put a bunch of stuff back on the car recently, then the possibilities are endless. Don't take it personally, that will just slow you down & besides I have thoroughly embarrased some very good mechanics when I brought my car back after paying them to fix something & showing them all the stuff they screwed up.
These cars require a very diligent attention to detail & a great deal of patience & a willingness to reconfigure your understanding of logic.

I see that it has been about a month sence anyone has posted on this thread... Did you get it fixed? I am having the same problem. I just replaced my head and timing belt and now I have lifter tick (I think... It may be too loud for lifter tick).. And this really rapid sounding arc coming from the intake manifold area.

Has anyone gotten anywhere with this yet?? The same thing is happening to me right now on my recently bought 92 AWD. Over the weekend I put on a 3" test pipe in place of the 3" cat, put in a new passenger side front axle, and installed an Autometer elec. FP gauge to replace the VDO one that was in the car. Very simple, common things. Go to start the car and I have the problems listed here. Very poor idle, very low vacuum (3-5), arcing sound coming from intake manifold area, very very rich too (.88-.99 constant, and LOTS of black smoke!). I'm at a loss. I've checked all my vacuum hoses, plugs (which were BLACK), wires. Before the weekend car ran FINE!! Anyone? In 7 yrs. with these cars I've NEVER encountered this type of problem before.

Ok, I checked the knock sensor for the hell of it. Actually, it was loose. Tightened it up, no change. ECU smelled/looked OK. Pulled the plugs and they were covered in BLACK!!! And the car has'nt even been driven on them yet, just run at idle about 4-5 times in the last couple days! Car is running ungodly rich. Black smoke like crazy out the exhaust. A/F is way rich and stays there at idle (.88-.99). Vacuum is still way low at 3-5 in/hg.
Went ahead and did a compression test too (warm engine). Results were good. Damn 150psi SOLID on all 4 cyl. What the hell is going on??? This problem was an INSTANT thing. What could have happened? Ran FINE before I changed the axle, put in the test pipe, and put in the Autometer elec. FP gauge this past Friday. Go to start the car and this is what I'm faced with. I know it has GOT to be something simple/stupid that I'm missing or overlooking.

My 92 Talon AWD is doing all of these symptoms too, I pinpointed the arcing sound to the PCV valve but havent gotten around to changing it yet to see if that was the problem, right now i have my idle set to 1000 and its not stalling anymore. 2 weeks ago when i first got the car on the road, it ran and idled smooth as glass, and now it has a rough idle, and i noticed it is starting to have what seems to be some form of idle surge but only when it hold it at a constant RPM above 1800. If someone replaces their PCV valve before I repost, let me know what happens

Same work was performed on my car and same results.

just wondering if anyone else has their EGR blocked off/removed? i was thinking maybe i might have messed up one of the vacuum lines, anyone know where i can find that vacuum diagram that was on taboospeedshop.com? their site is down.

I had a very similar problem a year ago, a miss at idle, running rough and rich etc....
And it ended up being a small intake manifold gasket leak, I installed a new gasket and instant fix. It is fairly easy to change.

Take a 2-3 foot piece of vac line or tube etc.. and stick one end in your ear and run the other end along where the gasket runs, it is little hard to get to, but you should be able to head a leak this way.

Bob could definitely be on to something...I used the hose technique but my leak was by the TB(or at least i thought it was the TB). Changed my TB gasket twice with no result. Gave up on the problem before the car hit storage. I think it probably was the intake gasket now that i think about it.

Its been a long time since I had this problem. I did fix it thought. Did you check to make sure your coil pack and transitor are working correctly? Could be a splice in the injector wires. They may be firing but not equally...
