96 gst

thinking about getting a 96 gst. I'm new to this kind of car. The motor only has 55k on it and the body has 86k on it. The guy is looking for 2900 for it. The motor and transmission are very sound, no rust at all. Over all a strong running car. The bad, the gas pedal is a little tough the push on, slight vibration on the right front and the interior is a little rough. But everything works. Is it worth it?

If your gonna buy a dsm then you better learn what a compression test is. Also a boost leak test and a leak down test. Your at a severe disadvantage because the seller knows about DSMs and especially his in particular while you don't seem to know much. Are there dash lights lit? Check engine?

If you are unsure of these test try and find someone that is familiar with them and take them with you. As jimsgsx stated if the owner will not let you do the tests or someone else do them for you it would not be a wise decision to buy it.

I'm going to learn to fix and work on it myself but no there's no lights on on the dash, it's just gong to be my daily drive. Not looking to mod it much, just want a good fun car that'll get good gas mileage and last a long time with good maintenance.

Well ultimately the decision is up to you. If you are willing to spend the 2900 on a learner car then great. The reason we are recommending running these tests first is to see if you can get some answers on what is wrong with the car and how much the cost of fixing would be. Everyone knows that these cars can be pretty pricey if neglected

Well good luck. These cars are a blast after ya fix everything the previous owners screwed up! Take a couple test drives. If he won't let you drive it have him drive it. Go through the gears. Listen for weird sounds. Look it over real good. Especially at the suspension parts and drivetrain. (weird vibration ya mentioned) If ya decide to buy it, buy a factory service manual and learn the maintenance routines or see if he has one to throw in with the deal.
