so i found this forum looking for answers to a problem(s) with the car i purchased tonight. looks to be pretty intact and thorough. i have owned and built two sti's. i love them to death but insurance say's otherwise. so i bought a 1991 eagle talon tonight for a cheap commuter. this is my first one of these. ran good at first.. then on to idle surge. guy had done timing and water pump already. so i thought ok. this is good body is beat and i mean beat. it is an automatic which sucks but none the less i thought ok. but on the way home it died 22.6 miles from where i bought it. popped the hood and it was steamy. has good oil level with no mix. but noticed the turbo glowing bright orange. way past red! so i let it cool for about 20 minutes then popped the radiator cap. let it blow off all it's steam. seemed kinda dry. maybe the thermostat got stuck... guy did have it sitting over a year. ok added water for now went to start it and it cranked over ! thinking sweet then nothing. just the starter spinning and not engaging. did i break it? not sure only morning and a pot of coffee will tell. if you have advice to the forum to look into advice would help. anyways that's my story on how i found this place and hope to find what i need. thank's for keeping sites like these around to keep us informed with what we need.

If when you turned it over it sounded like a free spinning starter you've lost compression. Sounds like the belt A. Gave out or jumped teeth, check the timing and do compression test. B. Turbo glow if you weren't beating the living sh** out of it, and even if you weren't means retard lean air fuel and you could have melted the pistons refer to A. Idol surge could also be from the lean but typically it is a vacuum leak which the cars are notorious for. All guessing assuming the car is stock with no modifications at all.
