Hey everyone, my name is Dylan and I bought my first car a few months back, a 98 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS. It was 700.00 dollars and it isn't perfect. I'm from West Virginia and this car is bit of a project but I'm trying to get it road ready before April. I've always loved these cars and hopefully one day I'll own a GSX, GST, or a TSI.

Well, lets start with the problems it has right now. When buying it the transmission had big holes in it and it was just doomed. So, I bought a used transmission with about 90,000 miles on it. I'm currently in the process of putting it in myself, which is kinda hard, seeing as I've never put in a transmission before. Also, the speed sensor wasn't the same on the other transmission as the 'new' one. So, now I have to replace the speed sensor.

The other issue that the previous owner told me is that it burns oil. I crawled under it and it seems to be leaking the oil from the oil pan. So, I'm going to replace the oil pan gasket and see if that helps any at all. If not, then I'll cross that bridge when it comes.

The last issue so far is, I decided to buy a new radio for it because the previous owners radio just wasn't that great. Well, I tried wiring it myself and now it blinks on and off. It also shuts off completely when I turn my high beams on, so if anyone knows what could cause that, it would be greatly appreciated if you could help me.

Anyway, I'm excited to learn more and more from my fellow DSMers :D

Ignore the sunroof, the previous owner had that thing on it. I have to figure out how to remove it.

Looks like a clean car to start with.

Post up some engine pictures.

When you say burning oil, do you mean the car smells like burning oil? Do you see bluish smoke out of the exhaust? A leaking oil pan, isn't going to cause oil to burn.

When it comes to radio, I would honestly remove it and start the wiring job from scratch. Check and re-check all of your work before putting power to the unit. Electrical issue can cause ALL KINDS of problems.

Thanks! I'll post up some engine pictures later today.

It smells like a lawn mower to me and I didn't really notice any smoke but there might have been some.

Yeah, I figured I would have to do that. I'm gonna try rewiring it in a couple days.

Be careful with getting used transmissions with that high of a mileage on them. A transmission can go out at any time but they are more prone to being touch when they already have some miles built up on them.

My husband's '94 Talon seemed to have more transmission issues than any care I have ever seen due to mileage on the transmissions he bought. Just thought I would put that out there.

my spyder was automatic, drove home from work one day and it was fine then the next morning went to go to work and got half way there and poof no gears but 2nd LOL so I switched to a stick

Yeah, I didn't really have the money to get a rebuilt one or something like that.

Yeah, I like manuals a lot better. That's what mine is.

Here's the engine bay when I first got it, it was a little dirty to say the least.
After I get this transmission finished, I'm going to clean it up a lot.
