So Im sure everyone knows the FP black is on sale. Has anyone bought it? I was hoping for a side by side comparison next to a tdo5. I am currently running a cx racing tdo5 20g and am curious how much bigger this thing really is. I have looked for pics in google search and searched the forums but did not see anything that shows it installed or next to a stock turbo. If anyone has already installed what are your thoughts on the black? At what rpm does it begin to spool and at what boost levels are you running? Thanks for any input!

Well i know my cxr 20g isnt exactly something to boast about but it can run 19-20 psi all day and for the price it was a nice direct bolt to break in my motor at 16-17 psi. I am very happy with my cxr turbo but it is to be my backup plan. Now its time for a better/bigger turbo. I ve seen plenty of these on evos but am hoping some dsm guys have bolted them up already. Does anyone know size wise how it compares to a holset hx35?

If you don't have supporting mods for at least 500hp, you'll be disappointed running a turbo that doesn't hit full boost until almost 5000 Rpms. But, it you have a capable setup, the black will pull your eyes out from 5000-8000 Rpms, at 35+ psi.

If you are looking to make 500 whp tops, the green would be the best choice.

A FP Black is the largest TD06-frame turbo available in a DSM bolt-on housing. That in mind, it compares to nothing and will likely be laggier than anything smaller than it based on wheel size alone.

What's crazy is all of the info you're seeking was either already answered in the FP Black Sale thread or elsewhere on the site if you searched around a little.

Has anyone bought it?
This guy...though his is the ball bearing version and he has a 2.3 engine so his spool numbers will vary a bit.

At what rpm does it begin to spool?

Spool time is a VERY hard to nail down without having a lot of data given the turbine and compressor size 4200-4700 would be a a ball park.

Does anyone know size wise how it compares to a holset hx35?

If you're looking at a bolt on HX35 a Green or Red will work better than the Black both power, fitment, and spool wise if you're shooting between 400-500WHP.

The Black would be a better option for those shooting for over the 500WHP up to 650WHP mark.

The 7 blade HX35 is a 60lb/min turbo. I've gotten 54-55lb/min in the bolt on housing with 25psi around 3800rpms. It's a different beast altogether in the T3 housing and I've logged 59-60lb/min and run up to 38psi on it. 25psi is about 4300 rpms.

Based on compressor output, I would compare the black to the 6 or 7 blade HX40, although I haven't run either...

Mine showed up yesterday. It is smaller than I expected and considerably smaller than the S256 it is replacing in overall size/weight. I can post some comparison pictures installed if you want.

Hey Vet, you still living up in washington? We talked quiet a bit a year or so ago about Montana. I am still very interested in checking out your car if you have some time in the future. Mine is at English and should be out soon, it would be nice to see yours finally!

Sorry to clog the thread OP, I too have been very interested to see how the blacks perform on our cars, in for results!

I actually moved back to Montana about 6 months ago! :ohdamn: A good opportunity came up to work in Billings and be closer to family and we just had our first baby in August so it has been a crazy 6 months...

There is about a mile and a half of gravel road getting to the drag strip, which is about 22 miles away (I made it out once and made one pass: 11.5@122 at 4000' elevation and 24psi), I no longer live 10 minutes from the English shop, oh, and I have been having to ship things from Portland/Washington non-stop since I left! I now have to order E85 4 barrels at a time and it works out to about $5/gallon with freight. I guess the good is I now have a 45'x35' shop with a lift..:thumb:

I do miss the PNW and I am going to miss it much more now that snow is on its way. I picked up a set of Evo 8 Enkei wheels and some Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 snow tires for the Evo so I will have some fun in the snow. I will probably strap them to the Talon and go tear sh** up at some point.

Ok, enough thread-jacking:

The old Borg makes the Black look pedestrian. The turbine on the Borg is a lot bigger..I wonder how they will compare spool-wise. You wouldn't guess the Black is the "bigger" turbo:

The S256 is a LOT heavier as well. I will try to get a weight here later. Going back to the garage now to try to sort out how I will run water lines to the Black.

This means little in the turbo world. Just because something is a bit more compact doesn't make it any less potent for its purpose. Switzer and BW turbos have always been bigger and heavier than most OEM and aftermarket makes. The same goes for Holsets. Take the compressor housings off on both, and you'll see the different changes.

Pretty sure Travis understands that.

Hey Shodan; just an observation, I wasn't intending to imply that it affected performance. Thanks, Chris. It is noteable that the 256 has a much larger turbine wheel, which probably helps in the "smaller" housing. I updated the results thread in this section and it is rippin at 27psi.

Congrats on the baby man, I can fully understand moving closer to family. Its a shame I missed the chance to see the car, let me know if you ever happen to pop into Portland again!

Glad to see its rippin around with the new black, ill keep an eye on your threads to see more as it progresses!
